Kittcom measure to be on the ballot
Voters will be asked to support a .2 percent sales tax increase to help support KITTCOM Emergency Management Services on the April ballot. The Kittitas County commissioners on Tuesday approved putting the issue on the ballot after a public hearing in which the financial needs of the service were detailed. Kittitas County’s current sales tax rate is 8.1 percent.
Celtic Christmas celebrated tonight
Geoffrey Castle’s Celtic Christmas will be performed at 7 tonight at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. The show Castle on the fiddle and electric violin accompanied by the Seattle Irish Dance Company. The show is presented by Christmas in Washington. Tickets are $30 forgeneral admission and $20 for kids under 12, and are available at the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce office.
Last-minute Santa visit
Iron Horse Brewery hosts Santa and Ponies from 2 to 4 p.m., on Saturday. It is a chance for kids to meet and get a photo with Santa, ride a pony and sip on hot chocolate. The pony rides are courtesy of Quiet Cadence, a recreational and equine-based non-profit for essential workers. The Pearl Street Books bookmobile will be there to help with last-minute gifts and food will be offered by Lutong Pinoy. The event is a fundraiser for Quiet Cadence.
Wavesons play at Punch Project
The Wavesons take the stage at Punch Project at 2 p.m., Saturday. The Ellensburg band is celebrating the release of its Croatia record. Punch Projects is open from noon to 4 p.m. with a holiday gift show in addition to the musical performance.
Season for holiday closures
All city offices and Central Transit will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Adult Activity Center will be closed on Christmas and Tuesday. The Stan Bassett Youth Center is closed through Jan. 2. FISH Open Table is closed on Christmas and Tuesday.
Ultimate jigsaw showdown
The 2023 Jigsaw Puzzle Championship Showdown is 6 p.m., Dec. 28, at the Hal Holmes Community Center. Teams advanced through a series of competitions over the course of the year to reach the title tilt. Spectators are welcome.
A send-off for Jay McGowan
There will be a retirement party of Cle Elum Mayor Jay McGowan from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 28 at the Upper Kittitas County Senior Center. McGowan did not seek reelection during this part election and leaves office at the end of the year. McGowan’s service to the city as a council member and mayor stretches back decades. The festivities will include an open mic at 1 p.m.
Position on Affordable Housing Commission open
A position is open on the city’s Affordable Housing Commission. The commission makes recommendations to the City Council on addressing the identified affordable housing needs of city residents. Information about applying for the position is available on the city’s website.

Local teams to play in Nicholson
Kittitas County high school basketball fans have a chance to see teams from Ellensburg, Kittitas and Cle Elum-Roslyn play in Nicholson Pavilion today. The schedule includes; the Cle Elum-Roslyn boys vs. Coupeville at 11 a.m. and the Warrior girls vs Warden at 1 p.m.; the Kittitas boys vs. Toutle Lake at 5 p.m.; and the Ellensburg girls vs. Mount Si at 7 p.m.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is prime rib, cheddar mashed potatoes, dinner rolls and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
