County approves budget
Kittitas County Commissioners approved the 2025 budget on Monday. The budget includes $20 million for a new county transfer station. During the budget process, the commissioners indicated that rising personnel costs would necessitate cutting $10 million from the general fund over the next three years. The commissioners also directed staff to recommend reductions in transportation spending in light of the voters’ rejection of a levy lift to fund road projects on the November ballot.
Choir by Candlelight tonight
The CWU Chamber Choir performs The Silence of Stars at 7 p.m. with pre-concert music at 6:40 p.m., Friday, in the United Methodist Church. The concert explores themes of the season with contemporary choral works, as well as music from a diversity of cultures and spiritual traditions, highlighting themes of sharing, giving, healing, peace, and strengthening community. Guest artist Tim Ribner from Portland is the featured collaborator. Tickets are $20 for general admission.
Ellensburg Big Band performs tonight
The Ellensburg Big Band performs tonight in the Ramsey Building Ballroom. Lessons will be provided at 6:30 p.m., the dance will start at 7 p.m. The show is supported by the Ellensburg Arts Commission and The Ellensburg Swing Club. Donations are appreciated.
Christmas in Cle Elum is Saturday
The Christmas in Cle Elum Lighted Parade is at 6 p.m., Saturday in downtown Cle Elum. The theme of the parade is Vintage Cle Elum. Visits with Santa are immediately after the parade.
Light Parade in Kittitas on Saturday
The annual Light Parade is Kittitas is at 6 p.m., Saturday. The parade is part of the Jingle and Mingle celebration which includes pictures with Santa from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, s’mores, hot dogs and hot chocolate from 5 to 7 p.m. at New Life Church and a dessert walk at the library following the parade.
CWU Theatre production continues
The Central Washington University Theatre production of “John Proctor is the Villain,” concludes with performances at 7:30 p.m., today, 7:30 p.m., Saturday and 2 p.m., Sunday, in the Tower Theater. The play follows a group of high school students as they study Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Information on tickets and the times and dates of other performances is on the CWU Theatre Department website.
CWU Jazz Concerts are Saturday
Central Washington University’s end-of-the-quarter jazz concerts are on Saturday in the McIntyre Music Building. An Afternoon of Jazz is at 4 p.m. and An Evening of Jazz is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and provide entry to both concerts.
‘Nutcracker’ performances this weekend
The Central Washington Dance Academy performs the Nutcracker at 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday, and 2 p.m., Sunday, at the Morgan Performing Arts Centers. Tickets are $20.
Symphony concert on Sunday
The CWU Symphony Orchestra Concert is 4 p.m., Sunday, in the McIntyre Music Building. Tickets are $15 for general admission.
SPORTS
High school basketball kicks into gear
The Kittitas Secondary School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are on the road this weekend. The Coyotes visit Tri-Cities Prep tonight with the girls' game at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the teams visit Mabton with the girls at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.
CWU basketball doubleheader on Saturday
The CWU women’s and men’s basketball teams play at Nicholson Pavilion on Saturday. The Wildcat women play Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m. and the men take on Western Washington at 4 p.m.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is a mushroom cheeseburger, roasted potatoes and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
