Unity Park construction starts at the end of the month
The center of historic downtown Ellensburg will see the start of Unity Park construction on Feb. 26, according to city of Ellensburg officials. Park construction includes the demolition of the former drive-through banking structure. The completed park will include a cultural arts and recreational events venue, a water feature, a picnic grove and public restrooms. The Bull statue will be removed during construction and then returned.
The Walk turns 25
Ellensburg’s First Friday Art Walk enters its 25th year with a list of venues celebrating artists starting at 5 p.m., today. There are venues in restaurants, hotels, businesses and galleries throughout the city, with some featuring music.
Kairos performs lunch concert
Kairos and Friends perform at the First Friday Lunch Concert at noon, Friday at Hal Holmes Community Center. The 40-minute concert features CWU music professors, students and community members performing various short pieces.
Valley Musical Theatre production opens tonight
The Valley Musical Theatre Winter Play production of “The Odd Couple,” opens at 7 o’clock tonight in the Ramsey Ballroom. The play continues with performances on Saturday and Sunday and on Feb. 8, 9 and 10. Jessica Horrocks and Jessica Solberg Black direct the play and it features Riley Newman as Oscar and Patrick Nolan as Felix.
Live chainsaw carving
Doane Hopkins will be doing live chainsaw carving at the Mule and Elk Brewery in Cle Elum at noon, Saturday.
Contra dance Saturday night
The Community Contra dance will start at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at Hal Holmes Community Center. All dances are taught, and no partner or special clothing is necessary. The event is free thanks to support from the Ellensburg Public Library.
Dutch Bros support FISH
From Feb. 1 through Feb. 18, the Ellensburg Dutch Bros is donating $1 from every Dutch Love-featured drink to the FISH Food Bank. Qualifying drinks include Dutch Love Latte, Dutch Luv Rebel energy drink and Dutch Luv Frost.
Chamber plans for Home and Garden Show
The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce is presenting a Home and Garden Show on April 23 at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. If you want to become an exhibitor in the show, applications are available on the chamber’s website.

EHS wrestlers compete in district meet
The Ellensburg High School wrestling team competes at its district tournament today in the Yakima SunDome. Competition gets underway at 9 a.m. District is the qualifying tournament for next weekend’s regional meet.
Final league play tonight
Ellensburg High School basketball closes out the league season at Othello tonight. The girls play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. For the boys, the district tournament starts on the road on Feb. 7. The girls begin district tournament play at 7 p.m., Feb. 9 at Nicholson Pavilion.
Sign up for youth volleyball league and running club
Registration opens for the coed youth volleyball league and coed youth running club on Monday. Volleyball registration closes on March 8 and the league runs from late March through June. The league is open to boys and girls in third through eighth grades. Running club registration runs through March 3 and the club is a six-week program open to kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. Registration information is available on the Parks and Recreation page of the city’s website.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is grilled citrus garlic chicken with mango salsa and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
