Shaquem Griffin to speak at CWU

Former Seattle Seahawk Shaquem Griffin will speak at Central Washington University at 7 p.m., Feb. 13 in the SURC Ballroom. Griffin made history as the first one-handed player in the National Football League. His presentation is part of Central’s Black History Month celebration and is free and open to the public.


Faculty recital set for Friday

CWU music professors saxophonist Aaron Burr and pianist Giyong Ahn will hold a joint faculty recital at 6 p.m., tonight, in the McIntyre Music Building. The show will explore themes of loss, memory, folklore and cats. The performance is free and open to the public.


Donkey basketball tonight in Thorp

The Thorp School hosts Donkey Basketball tonight. Doors open at 5 p.m. for dinner, concessions, a petting zoo, carnival games, wiener dog races and an auction. Basketball starts at 6:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser sponsored by the Thorp Booster Club.


Enterprise Challenge deadline nears

Today is the deadline to enter the Enterprise Challenge. The challenge, sponsored by the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce, is an annual business plan competition for new and emerging companies within Kittitas County. Registration information is on the chamber’s website.


Curator talk on Saturday

Justin Beckman, curator of Gallery One’s Vertical Hold exhibit will give a Curator Talk at 11 a.m., Saturday at Gallery One. Vertical Hold is a multi-venue exhibition of experimental film and video on display at Gallery One and the Punch Gallery in Thorp.


Dean Nicholson Boulevard closure next week

Dean Nicholson Boulevard will be closed at North Walnut Street from Tuesday through Friday for an above-ground well test for the new CWU North Academic Complex project. Traffic will be routed to East 18th Avenue.


SPORTS

High school hoops on tap this weekend

In high school basketball tonight, Ellensburg travels to Ephrata with the girls’ game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.

 

Weekend hoops in action this weekend

The CWU women’s basketball team travels to Alaska this weekend. The Wildcat battle Alaska-Fairbanks at 1 p.m., Saturday. The Wildcat men are at home Saturday for a showdown with Northwest Nazarene at 4 p.m. Central is in a three-way tie for first place in the GNAC with Northwest Nazarene and St. Martin’s.

 

Baseball/softball registration is open

Ellensburg Youth Baseball and Softball registration closes on Feb. 7. The league is open to kids ages 4 through 12. Registration information is on the organization’s website.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is roast chicken chimi churri, parmesan polenta, mixed vegetables and Mandarin oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

There is a 40 percent chance of rain during the day. The weekend forecast calls for highs of 37 on Saturday and 36 on Sunday with a chance of snow on Sunday.
