Central Washington University recently received two grants, including one to install solar panels on Dugmore Hall.



NEWS

CWU receives zero-carbon grants

Central Washington University received two grants totaling $1 million to advance the school’s solar decarbonization program. A $473,467 grant goes toward installing a 100-kilowatt solar system on the roof of Dugmore Hall and a $451,642 grant is to conduct a large-scale study for the rest of the CWU campus. The grants are from the state Department of Commerce.


Roslyn enacts burn ban

Due to extreme fire danger, the Roslyn Fire Department enacted a burn ban for the city beginning today. The ban prohibits outdoor fires and charcoal barbecues. Propane grills and pits are allowed.


“Anastasia: The Musical” opens tonight

The Valley Theatre production of “Anastasia: The Musical” premieres at 7 p.m., Friday at Morgan Performing Arts Center. The play tells the story of what became of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. Performances are scheduled for 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 7 p.m., July 19 and 2 and 7 p.m., July 20.  Tickets are $20 for general admission and are available on the Valley Theatre website.


“Elemental” is Friday movie in park

“Elemental” will be shown at Veteran’s Memorial Park at about 9 p.m., tonight. The movie, presented by Ellensburg Parks and Recreation, is free. People are encouraged to bring chairs and snacks. Movies are shown every Friday through Aug. 2.


County holds hearing to set price for First and Last Chance Tavern property

The Kittitas County commissioners will hold a public hearing in the commissioners’ auditorium at 2 p.m., Tuesday to set a minimum price for property located at 1200 E. University Way, which is the address of the First and Last Chance Tavern. The county purchased the tavern property in 2016 as part of the Kittitas Valley Event Center expansion project.


Candidate forums scheduled

Primary candidate forums will be held in Ellensburg on Tuesday and Cle Elum on Wednesday. The Ellensburg forum will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hal Holmes Community Center and the Cle Elum forum is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Center. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters of Kittitas County sponsor the events.


County accepting lodging tax grant applications

Kittitas County is accepting applications for the 2025 Lodging Tax Grant Funds for Special Events and Projects. The application is on the county’s website and the deadline for submission is Sept. 20. This countywide program is a collaborative effort between Kittitas County and the cities of Ellensburg, Cle Elum and Roslyn. The funding supports events and festivals that attract tourists to Kittitas County.


SPORTS

Chance to run the tunnel

The Snoqualmie Tunnel 5K Glow Run is Saturday. Registration is at 9 a.m. with the first race at 10 a.m. For one day only the tunnel is partially lit with LED lights and participants are outfitted with glow gear. Registration and cost information is on the Snoqualmie Tunnel 5K Glow Run website.


Remote control races on Saturday

Remote control boat races will be held at Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. The grass area and upper pond are closed to the public during this event.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Greek chicken salad and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.


WEATHER                                                                              

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 97 degrees. Sunset is at 8:55 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 66 degrees. Winds will be 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. The weekend forecast calls for highs of 97 on Saturday and 94 on Sunday.
