CWU celebrates Dia de los Muertos

CWU celebrates Dia de los Muertos from 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday in the Student Union Ballroom. The will be a live mariachi performance by Los Faraones Del Norte, a Folklorico performance, and other activities such as face painting, painting sugar skulls, and more. The event is open to students and the community.


CWU Piano Fest on Friday

Piano duo Mundi George and Guli perform at 7 p.m., today, in the McIntyre Music Building Concert Hall as part of the CWU Piano Fest. The performance features excerpts from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” a rare work by Belizean-born composer Errollyn Wallen, and a selection of pieces by Latin American composers. The concert is free and open to the public.

                

Downtown cleanup is Saturday

The annual Downtown Fall Cleanup is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday. Volunteers will gather at Unity Park. The cleanup is organized by the Ellensburg Downtown Association. People are asked to bring gloves. Other materials are provided.

 

CWU celebrates Viola Day on Sunday

The CWU Music Department presents Viola Day on Sunday at the McIntyre Music Building. Violists of all levels and guests are invited for a day of music and merriment. Concerts are at noon and 6 p.m., Violympics at 1:30 p.m. and Masterclass with Pittsburg Symphony's Randy Kelly at 3 p.m. There will be free food and prizes.


Park access is to be closed for the season

The Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park access road gate will be closed at the end of the day Sunday and will remain closed through the winter season. Ellensburg Parks flush toilet restrooms will be closed by Monday, and will not open until next spring. Many Ellensburg Parks are or will be equipped with temporary restrooms during the winter including North Alder Street Park, Mountain View Park, McElroy Park, and the Rotary Park Off-Leash Area. The temporary restroom at Wippel Park will be removed for the winter. Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park and Paul Rogers Park both have vault toilets. Restrooms and entry gates will reopen in the spring.


Ballots being returned

As of Thursday afternoon, about 44 percent of the Nov. 5 General Election ballots had been returned to the Kittitas County Auditor’s Office. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m., Nov. 5.


Set your clocks back

Daylight Savings begins on Sunday. People are advised to turn their clocks back by one hour before going to bed Saturday night.


SPORTS

Final regular season games for football

In the final week of regular-season high school football for most teams, Cle Elum-Roslyn hosts River View at 7 p.m., tonight, and Kittitas welcomes Warden at 1 p.m., Saturday. Easton travels to play Lake Quinault at 1 p.m., Saturday, and then finishes the season at Wishkah on Nov. 9.


EHS volleyball advances in post-season

The Ellensburg High School volleyball team swept Toppenish, 3-0, in the first round of the league playoffs on Wednesday. The Bulldogs host an opponent yet to be determined at 6 p.m., Saturday.


In other high school sports on Saturday, the EHS cross country team competes in the district meet at 12:45 p.m. at Apple Ridge Run, and the Bulldogs soccer team welcomes East Valley at noon in a district playoff game.


CWU football faces key league foe

The top two teams in the Lone Star Conference face off when the CWU football team travels to play Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas, at 4 p.m., Saturday. Angelo State is in first place with a 6-0 conference record. Central is a game behind at 5-1 in conference.

In other CWU sports, the volleyball is at home Saturday against Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m. in Nicholson Pavilion. The men’s basketball team hosts Pacific Lutheran in an exhibition game at 4 p.m., Saturday.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 47 degrees. Sunset is at 5:44 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 36 degrees. There is a 80 percent chance of rain during the day with occasional showers overnight. Winds will be 5 to 10 mph. The weekend forecast calls for highs of 52 of Saturday and 52 on Sunday. There is a chance of rain on Saturday.
