Veterans Day celebrations this weekend

Veterans Day celebrations today include the Upper Kittitas County Senior Center hosting a Veterans’ Appreciation Breakfast at 8 a.m. On Saturday, Central Washington Air ROTC stages its 24-Hour POW/MIA Senior Vigil. Ellensburg’s annual Veterans Day Parade is at 11 a.m. After the parade, the International Association of Fire Fighters Local #158 hosts a barbecue lunch for veterans at Station 29 on Mountain View Avenue.


Fall play opens tonight

The Ellensburg High School Fall Play production of “Play On!” opens tonight at 7 o’clock at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. There will be two performances \at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. There also are performances next weekend. Tickets are $15 for general admission.


CWU Brew Club supports Maui's recovery

The CWU Brew Club in conjunction with Ellensburg Brewing Co. is holding a release party for its Maui Relief Beer IPA at 5 p.m., today at Ellensburg Brewing Co. on Main Street as part of a nationwide Kokua Project to raise money to support Maui’s recovery from devastating wildfires last August.


Volunteers needed for a restoration project

Volunteers can participate in a Wilson Creek restoration project at 10 a.m., Saturday at 1100 Woodhouse Loop, organized by the Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group. Volunteers will help plant trees and shrubs along Wilson Creek. Registration information is available on Mid-Columbia’s Facebook page.


Volunteers needed for cold weather shelter

Volunteer training sessions for the Cold Weather Shelter are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., today at Foursquare; 9:30 a.m., Saturday, at United Methodist; and 6:30 p.m., Monday, at First Lutheran. The nightly shelter will rotate among six Ellensburg churches.


Help with community Thanksgiving dinner

Volunteers are needed for the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at 3 p.m., Nov. 22 at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. If interested in volunteering, contact the Adult Activity at 962-7242. The dinner is free to all community members.


City approves fieldhouse consultant contract

The Ellensburg City Council approved a $1.1 million contract with Helix Design to assist in the design of a fieldhouse at Rotary Park. The facility would help replace the racquet and recreation center, which was destroyed in a fire last December. The process will include public workshops. The total project is estimated to cost $25 million. The city is working to secure state funding for the project. It is scheduled to begin construction in the fall of 2024.


Fall Choral Classic next week

CWU’s Fall Choral Classic is Tuesday and Wednesday at the McIntyre Music Building. The event welcomes high school choral groups from across the state working with Central professors and music students and features free public performances by CWU choral groups at 11:40 a.m., 1:20 p.m. and 5:10 p.m., each day.


SPORTS

At state this week

Multiple Kittitas County high school teams and athletes are competing in state tournaments this weekend. The Cle Elum-Roslyn High School soccer team plays Davenport at 4 p.m., on Saturday at Freeman High School in Rockford. The Ellensburg volleyball team plays Washington High School of Tacoma at 10:45 a.m. today at the Yakima Sundome in the first round of the state 2A tournament. Ellensburg sends multiple swimmers to the 2A State Meet at the King County Aquatic Center continuing through Saturday.


Central football battles for first place

The Lone Star Conference title will be on the line when the Central Washington University football team travels to play Texas Permian Basin at noon, Saturday, in Odessa, Texas. Both teams are undefeated in league play heading into the final game of the regular season.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is a Seattle Dog — a smoked sausage with cream cheese and caramelized onions on a warm bun — roasted peppers, potatoes and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
