Ribbon cutting for Ellensburg mural
A ribbon cutting and celebration of the Ellensburg Postcard Mural is set for 5 p.m. today. The mural is on the former Ellensburg Blue Rock building on Fourth Avenue and Pine Street. The project features art by different artists within each letter of Ellensburg. It is sponsored by the Ellensburg Downtown Association. The artists are: E, Tom Vandenberg. L, Jason Clifton; L. Stephanie Ritter; E, Lynne McCowin; N, Erika Kovalenko; S and B Austin Smith; U, Stephanie Ritter; R, Jason Clifton; R, Tom Pickerel drawing by Jason Clifton; and G, Matt Milligan. The background painting is by Tom Vandenberg and the sunflowers are by Kathie Milligan. The ribbon cutting will be followed by an after-party at the Mule.

Lunch concert Friday
Kairos and Friends will perform a free lunch concert at noon, today at Hal Holmes Community.
Big band to perform
The Ellensburg Big Band will perform tonight at the Ellensburg Methodist Church. Swing dance lessons will be offered at 6:30 p.m. and the band will take the stage at 7 p.m. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted to support the Joel Talerico Memorial Scholarship Award.
Central hosts climate coalition summit this weekend
CWU hosts an environmental and climate coalition summit from Friday through Sunday. The Front and Centered 2023 Members’ Summit, “Soulful Solidarity,” will provide an opportunity for CWU students, faculty, and staff, to interact with other local advocates from around the state who are focused on environmental justice and the climate crisis. Several events at the summit are open to the public, including the keynote address at 7 tonight in the SURC Theatre. More information is available on CWU’s website.
CWU puts on Rocky Horror show
CWU students will stage a shadowcast production of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” tonight in McConnell Auditorium. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show starts at 10 p.m. The first 500 people receive goody bags.
Recovery organization fundraiser is Saturday
The annual Kittitas County Recovery Community Gala fundraiser starts at 5 p.m., Saturday in Sue Lombard Hall. The gala features silent and live auctions, a dinner and a dance reception. General admission tickets are $60.
Fall Clean Up on Saturday
The annual downtown Ellensburg Fall Clean Up is at 8 p.m., Saturday. The check-in table will be at Rotary Pavilion. The Clean Up is organized by the Ellensburg Downtown Association.
SPORTS
Friday Night under the Lights action
In Friday night high school football, Ellensburg hosts Shadle Park at 7 p.m. in the final game of the season. Kittitas and Cle Elum qualified for post-season play. In the first round of playoff action, Kittitas travels to play River View at 7 p.m., and Cle Elum-Roslyn plays at Tri-Cities Prep at 7:30 p.m.
Central basketball sneak peek
Central’s men’s basketball plays an exhibition game against Lincoln University at 4 p.m., Saturday. Lincoln is coached by former Seattle Supersonics star Gary Payton.
On to state
The Ellensburg boys and girls cross country teams compete in the state 2A Cross Country Meet at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday. The girls' race is at 11 a.m. with the boys at 12:30 p.m. In other high school sports on Saturday, the Ellensburg volleyball team hosts Ephrata at 2 p.m. in the district final.
