NEWS

Holiday traffic warning

State Route 970 between Lauderdale junction and Cle Elum will be restricted to local traffic only westbound, today through Monday, according to the state Department of Transportation. To reach Cle Elum, travelers should stay on US-97 south to Ellensburg and then take I-90 west to Cle Elum. SR-970 will remain open to eastbound traffic. The detour is required because crews are working on building up the embankment and preventing the Teanaway River from eroding SR-970.


Parade takes to the streets of Ellensburg

The annual Ellensburg Rodeo Parade starts at 9:30 a.m., Saturday. The parade begins on University Way near Alder Street, turns down Pearl Street and winds through the downtown core. This year’s grand marshal is Jason Buck, a member of the Yakama Encampment.


Rodeo action set for this weekend

The Ellensburg Rodeo features performances starting at 6:45 tonight, 12:45 p.m., Saturday, 11:45 a.m., Sunday, with the finals at 11:45 a.m., Monday. Also, the Rodeo Arena hosts the PRCA Xtreme Bulls competition at 8 p.m., on Saturday, and the Sunday Night Show at 6:30 p.m., on Sunday.


Fair fun all weekend long

The Kittitas County Fair runs through Monday at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds. In addition to the fair food, 4-H exhibits, kids’ games, carnival rides, comedy and magic acts, numerous musical acts will perform. The lineup includes Abbigale, the Ellensburg Big Band and Mel Peterson.


Band on the march

The Ellensburg High School will march in the Capitol Avenue/EHS neighborhoods tonight in preparation for Saturday’s Ellensburg Rodeo Parade. The band heads out at about 5:30 p.m.


Market sale today

The Kittitas County Fair Market sale starts at 11 a.m., today in Bloom Pavilion. Market sale proceeds go to 4-H members who raise the animals. Last year the community raised $670,000 at the sale. Buyers can bid in person or online. The sale features the 4-H Endowment Trust Fund auction. This year’s endowment animal is a Suffolk-Hampshire lamb raised by Veronica Mattson.


Do the walk

The First Friday Art Walk takes place tonight starting at 5 o’clock in downtown Ellensburg.


Turn on the Friday Night Lights

High school football season gets underway tonight with Ellensburg traveling to Zillah, and Cle Elum-Roslyn heading to Manson. Kickoff for both games is 7 p.m. The Kittitas game at Lake Roosevelt scheduled for Friday was canceled.


Punch Projects hosts Apple Valley Wranglers

The Apple Valley Wranglers will perform from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday at the Punch Projects stage in Thorp. The Apple Valley Wranglers are a Western swing band. The juried art exhibit, Barnstorm, is currently on display at Punch Projects.


Coal Miners Days this weekend

The Upper County celebrates Coal Miners Days this weekend. Events include Dinner with the Miners at 5 p.m., Saturday at Ronald’s Hawthorne Hall, the posthumous honoring of Fred Fischer as King Coal at 9 a.m., Sunday at the Coal Miners’ Memorial, followed by the Coal Miners’ Day Parade in downtown Roslyn.


Whole Health pharmacist honored

Ellensburg pharmacist Clinton Knight of Whole Health Pharmacy was named Washington Pharmacist of the Year by the Washington State Pharmacy Association. Knight will be honored at the association’s annual meeting on Nov. 4 at Suncadia Resort.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 82 degrees. Sunset is at 7:41 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 53 degrees. There is a slight chance of a rain shower overnight. Winds will be from 10 to 15 mph. The weekend weather calls for highs of 88 on Saturday, 77 on Sunday and 75 on Labor Day.
