Swauk Creek fire at 320 acres

The Swauk Creek fire is at 320 acres and 3 percent containment as of Thursday afternoon. The town of Liberty remains at a Level 1 notice, which encourages residents to be ready to leave. There was minimal fire growth overnight on Wednesday. Crews continue to work on direct and indirect line placement.

 

Rebate opportunities available

Ellensburg received over $4.1 million to offer residents and small business owners a home electrification and appliance rebate program. The money comes from the state Climate Commitment Act. Low and moderate-income residents and small business owners may be eligible for up to $30,000 in rebates for high-efficiency electric equipment upgrades. Qualification information is available on the city’s website.

 

Threshing Bee this weekend

The 40th annual Threshing Bee and Equipment Show is on Saturday and Sunday at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. There are live threshing demonstrations each day and a tractor parade at 1 p.m. each day. Admission is $2 by donation. The Kittitas Valley Early Iron Club organizes the event.

 

Date set for Unity Park grand opening

Unity Park’s grand opening will be held on Oct. 5 in the park created at the Fourth Avenue and Pearl Street intersection. Music will start at 12:30 p.m. with a ceremony to follow at 1 p.m. Performances include Star Anna, the Yakama Nation’s Little Swan Dancers, Killdeer String Band, Micah J, Mexican Folclorico Dance and the Sleepers.

 

Spirit Therapeutic fundraiser is Saturday

The Capture the Spirit dinner and auction supporting the Spirit Therapeutic Riding Center is t 5:30 p.m., Saturday at the therapeutic riding center.

 

City Council meets Monday

The Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., Monday. A discussion of an agreement between the city and the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce regarding economic development services is on the agenda.

 

Voter registration event on Tuesday

A National Voter Registration event sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County and the Ellensburg Public Library is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Hal Holmes Community Center. The event includes a demonstration of the county’s Accessible Voting Unit which allows voters with disabilities to vote in complete privacy.

 

CWU professor named math publication’s editor

Central Washington University mathematics professor Stuart Boersma has been named editor of the Mathematical Association of America’s Math Horizons magazine. The publication aims to provide a point of entry for those casually interested in the magic of numbers. Math Horizons names a new editor every five years.

 

SPORTS

High school football set for Friday night

Ellensburg and Kittitas high school football teams are on the road tonight. The Bulldogs travel to Selah for a game at 7 tonight. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 28-9 loss to Othello last Friday. The Coyotes travel to Columbia for a 7 p.m. kickoff, looking to rebound from a 16-6 loss to Granger last Friday. Cle Elum-Roslyn is at home facing Adna at 7 p.m. The Warriors opened with a 21-17 win over Manson last Friday. Easton’s football team makes the five-hour bus trip to play Clallum Bay at 1 p.m., Saturday.

 

CWU football travels to Colorado

After opening the season with a loss to the University of San Diego last Saturday, the Central Washington University football team stays on the road, traveling to play Colorado Mesa University at noon, Saturday.

 

CWU volleyball plays at home

CWU volleyball hosts the CWU Invitational with matches today and Saturday. Central faces Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m. today and battle defending national champion Cal State Los Angeles at 4 p.m., Saturday. Both matches are in Nicholson Pavilion.

 

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Mahi Mahi rice bowl and Mandarin oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 78 degrees. Sunset is at 7:16 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 52 degrees. Winds will be 10 to 25 mph. The weekend forecast calls for highs of 73 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday.
