Department of Justice investigates school district
The Ellensburg School District is the subject of a federal Department of Justice investigation, school district officials announced in an email Friday night. The investigation includes site visits this week to investigate school district systems and procedures as a result of an investigation, which started in fall 2023, by the Educational Opportunities Section of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. District officials said they have been providing information to the DOJ since this fall.
Today is city council deadline
Applications for the open Ellensburg City Council Position 3 seat must be turned in by 5 p.m., today. The vacancy was created by Adam Winn’s resignation. The City Council will interview candidates at a special meeting at 6 p.m., Feb. 12. Applicants must be registered voters within the city of Ellensburg and have lived within the city for the past year.
Ellensburg City Council meets tonight
The Ellensburg City Council will discuss an annexation request for parcels along West Dolarway Road at its meeting starting at 7 o’clock tonight. The council will also discuss the Community Development Department’s long-range planning work program.
Nominations open for Historical Preservation Awards
Nominations are being accepted for the Ellensburg Historic Preservation Awards. To be eligible the building must be at least 50 years old, relatively unaltered and within the city limits. Nomination information is available on the city’s website. The awards are a joint effort between the city’s Landmark and Design Commission and the Kittitas County Historical Museum. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 29. Information is available on the city’s website.
County to consider lowering speed limit
A proposal to lower the speed limit on the Kittitas Highway between the Ellensburg city limits and No. 6 Road, as well as placing an all-way stop at the intersection of Kittitas Highway and No. 6 Road will be the topic of a Kittitas County commissioners’ public hearing at 2 p.m., Tuesday in the commissioners’ auditorium.
Discussion focuses on climate change
This month’s Good Life Community discussion focuses on living with climate change at 6 p.m., Tuesday at Hal Holmes Community Center. The free community discussion will feature CWU philosophy professors Cindy Coe and David Schwan.
Get into the swing
The Ellensburg Big Band continues its Swing Dance Project at 7 tonight, at Hal Holmes Community Center. The Big Band will offer a series of free swing dance lessons over the year. The project is funded through an Ellensburg Arts Commission grant with additional support from the Ellensburg Public Library. The evening starts with lessons for beginners.
Give triathlon a try
Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool is giving people the chance to participate in an Indoor Ironman Triathlon starting today through March 5. The triathlon consists of 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of bike/elliptical and 26.2 miles run/walk. Not all events are required to be done in the traditional sequence or completed at the pool facility. The cost is $50 and includes admission to the pool for a month and a T-shirt upon completion.

Celebrate signing day
The CWU football team will celebrate its 2024 signing class with a celebration at 5 p.m., Wednesday at Ellensburg Brewery.
EHS basketball in district playoffs
Ellensburg High School basketball teams enter postseason action in district playoff games this week. The Bulldog boys host Selah at 7 p.m., Wednesday, and the EHS girls play the winner of East Valley vs. Grandview, at 7 p.m., Friday in Nicholson Pavilion.

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Minestrone soup and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
