Closures for MLK Day
Schools and government offices will be closed today for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The Ellensburg City Council has changed its meeting from Monday to Tuesday. The council agenda includes consideration of a services agreement between the city and the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce.
Missoula Theatre comes to town in January
The Missoula Children’s Theater will stage “Treasure Island” on Saturday at Hal Holmes Community Center. Today the theatre company will hold a series of free workshops for children in grades K to 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. Auditions are from 4 to 6 p.m. for grades K-12 on Tuesday. There is a $45 fee for those who receive roles in the production.
Road closures set
Sections of Seattle Avenue and Locust Street will be closed starting Monday to allow for utility extension work. Seattle Avenue will be closed about 400 feet east of Willow and Locust will be closed about 1,300 feet south of East Capitol Avenue. The contractor will drill well holes for dewatering on Monday and return to start excavation on Jan. 27.
South Railroad to be closed
A portion of South Railroad Avenue will be closed starting Tuesday through Feb. 21 The closure is from 714 S. Railroad Ave. to 505 S. Railroad Ave. at Mercer Creek for the extension of a sewer main and removal of a lift station.
Habitat holds open house
Habitat for Humanity holds an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday in the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce Board Room. There will be information on Habitat’s homeownership program and 12 affordable homes being built in Ellensburg.
Banned Books event on Thursday
Lion Rock Visiting Writers Series and CWU Libraries present “Banned Books,” an event dedicated to celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of intellectual freedom from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday in the Brooks Library Student Commons.
Valley Theatre presents “Peter and the Star Catcher”
Valley Theatre presents its Winter Play, “Peter and the Star Catcher,” starting on Feb. 7 in the IOOF Oddfellows Ballroom. The play is based on the novel by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson. Show and ticket information is on the Valley Theatre website.

CWU basketball wins over the weekend
The CWU men’s and women’s basketball teams were victorious in play Saturday at Nicholson Pavilion. The Central men defeated Montana St.-Billings, 82-69, led by Michael Sanders with 19 points. The Wildcats improved to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Central women topped Montana St.-Billings, 48-45, behind Sunny Huerta’s 22 points. CWU is 12-4 overall, 5-2 in league.
Kittitas and Cle Elum matchup on Saturday
In a showdown between Kittitas County high school rivals, the Kittitas boys defeated Cle Elum-Roslyn, 52-44, on Saturday. The Coyote girls defeated the Warriors, 64-21.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is Zuppa Toscana, garlic bread and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
