Top Story: Burn ban imposed in the lower valley

A burn ban was imposed Saturday by the Kittitas County Fire Marshal on the lower Kittitas Valley — from Elk Heights to the Columbia River. The ban prohibits open burning, but at this point does not prohibit propane, gas, or charcoal grills, and campfires are allowed in fire rings in designated campgrounds. The action was taken due to dry conditions.


Chance to meet your state representatives

Town hall meetings with 13th District representatives — Reps. Tom Dent and Alex Ybarra and Sen. Judy Warnick — will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cle Elum Centennial Center and from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Ellensburg City Hall on Tuesday. Both events will feature question-and-answer periods.


City accepting grant applications

The city of Ellensburg is accepting applications for the council-funded grants program and the Arts Commission grants. Five grants are offered. Information and application materials are available on the city’s website. The deadline for all the grant programs is Aug. 31.


EVENTS

Write Together on Wednesday

Ellensburg Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading program features Write Together Now with Poet Laureate Marie Marchand at 6 p.m., Wednesday at Hal Holmes Community Center. Reservations are required, call 962-7228.


Learning about community service

The library’s Teen Summer program presents the Rewards of Community Service at 3:30 p.m., Thursday at the FISH facility, 804 Elmview Road.

Concert supports Ellensburg Community Radio

Ellensburg Community Radio’s Summer Concert featuring Star Anna, Mark Pickerel and Stephanie Anne Johnson will be 5:30 p.m., Friday at The Brick House Gardens and Nursery. The concert is a fundraiser for ECR. For information on tickets go to www.eburgradio.org.


Valley Musical Theatre to present “9 to 5”

Valley Musical Theatre’s production of “9 to 5” continues with performances on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and July 20, 21 and 22. Tickets are $20 for general admission if purchased in advance, for $25 if bought at the door.


Open house and potluck at Cle Elum Hatchery

An open house and potluck will be held by the Yakama Nation Fishery at the Cle Elum Hatchery on Friday. Self-guided tours start at 10 a.m. and lunch is served at noon. Salmon will be provided. People with last names starting with A-to-H are asked to bring a salad or casserole, I-to-P, fruit or a dessert, and Q-to-Z, beverages (no alcohol).


Youth gladiators needed

Registration is open for the annual Youth Gladiator Dash on Aug. 5 at Rotary Park. The event is open for youth aged 5 through 8th grade. Activities included running, jumping, sliding, crawling, balancing, hopping, searching, climbing, throwing and getting muddy. Registration is $10 and includes a T-shirt if done before July 21. LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is lemon chicken alfredo, mixed vegetables and fruit cocktail. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The following councils and boards meet this week:

• The Cle Elum City Council meets at 6 p.m., Monday at City Hall.

• The Cle Elum-Roslyn School Board is holding a board retreat, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday at Swauk-Teanaway Grange.

• The Kittitas City Council meets at 6 p.m., Tuesday at City Hall.

• The Ellensburg School Board meets at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School
