Memorial Day services in Ellensburg

Ellensburg’s Memorial Day Celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., today, at Veterans Memorial Park. A lunch provided by local Rotary Clubs follows the ceremony with donations going to local veterans’ organizations.


Memorial Day services in Roslyn

The Upper County Memorial Day Service honoring veterans will be held at the Roslyn Historic Cemetery at 11 a.m., today.


Offices closed Monday

All schools, city, county and state offices are closed today for Memorial Day.


KVFR Chief earns honor

Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue Chief John Sinclair received the Chief Dan Packer Fire Chief of the Year Award from the Washington Fire Chiefs last week. The recipients of the award emulate Fire Chief Dan Packer’s strong leadership characteristics of loyalty, determination, and strength in action and relationships.


Vacancies on city commission

There are two vacancies on Ellensburg’s Landmarks and Design Commission. The openings are for a representative of the Ellensburg Downtown Association and a historic property owner. The commission is responsible for reviewing proposed changes to Ellensburg landmark properties.


Money for ideas

Central Washington University is offering a prize of up to $10,000 for ideas that could save CWU money. The contest is open to all state employees and ideas are submitted to the state’s Productivity Board. Submission information is available on CWU’s website.


Symphonic Band concert on Tuesday

The CWU Symphonic Band performs Bridges at 7 p.m., Tuesday in the McIntyre Music Building.  The program features work from the standard wind band repertoire and contemporary works for wind and percussion. The Symphonic Band collaborates with Benjamin Smethurst who will serve as narrator for Steve Danyew’s emotional work, Into the Silent Land. The concert is free.


CWU choirs perform Wednesday

CWU Choirs perform “Canciones de Latinoamerica” at 7 p.m., Wednesday in the McIntyre Music Building. The University Chorale, Wildcat Chorus, Vox Divina and CWU Chamber Choir will perform. The choirs have worked with Venezuelan composer and conductor Cristian Grases this spring. Tickets are $15 for general admission.


CWU Wind Ensemble Concert on Thursday

The CWU Wind Ensemble performs at 7 p.m., Thursday at the McIntyre Music Building. The concert features the ensemble in a preview performance before it presents at the 20th World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles international conference in South Korea this summer. The concert is free.


SPORTS

Kittitas girls place fourth at state

The Kittitas Secondary School softball placed fourth in the state 2B tournament in Yakima this weekend. The Coyotes won Friday, but started Saturday with a loss to eventual state-champion Adna. The girls bounced back with a win over Forks before falling to Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in the game to determine third and fourth place.

The FISH Open Table Lunch is closed today for Memorial Day.
