Giving thanks for Search and Rescue
Kittitas County Search and Rescue responded to a call Thanksgiving night, locating a 16-year-old boy who was separated from his family while riding an electric motorcycle off of Umptanum Road near the Umptanum Falls area, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office. The teenager was riding ahead of the family car when he took a wrong turn and disappeared from view at about 4:30 p.m., Thursday. After searching on their own for two hours, the family called 911. Search and rescue crews found the teen at 10:15 p.m. about four miles from his starting point and reunited him with his family
Having a cultural conversation
Chinese language and cultural instructor Zhong Xiaoyin is featured in CWU Library’s fall quarter Cultural Conversations at 5 p.m., Tuesday at Hal Holmes Community Center. Xiaoyin is from Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, where she developed a passion for food and the exploration of Chinese culture. The Cultural Conversations program provides a community forum for meeting new friends and learning about global cultures. The event is free.
Road closure begins today
The closure of Cooke Canyon Road between Brick Mill Road and Schnebly Road begins today and continues through the end of May. The closure is needed for the replacement of a bridge of the KRD irrigation canal. Traffic will be detoured onto Lester Road and Schnebly Road.
Local high school teams earn their day
The Kittitas County Commissioners designated today to be Ellensburg High School Boys Cross Country Team Day in recognition of the boys’ team being named the Fall 2023 WIAA 2A Academic Team Champion for maintaining a 3.95 GPA through the course of the season.
The commissioners designed Tuesday as Cle Elum-Roslyn High School Girls’ Soccer Team Day in recognition of the girls being named the 2023 WIAA 2B Fall Academic State Champion for maintaining a 3.81 GPA through the course of the season.
Sounds of the season
People who enjoy holiday caroling are invited to take part in Christmas Caroling with the Valley Voices Community Choir. Rehearsals will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12 at the Ellensburg Presbyterian Church in preparation for caroling on Dec. 17 and 19. Suggested donations are $30 for a family to participate in the series.
Wind Ensemble concert on Wednesday
The CWU Wind Ensemble Concert is 7 p.m., Wednesday at the McIntyre Music Building. The Wind Ensemble is using this academic year to prepare to perform at the 20th World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Conference in Gwangju, South Korea in July of 2024. This performance is free.
SPORTS
CWU football wins, advances
A 21-17 victory over Bemidji State on Saturday advances the CWU football team to the Super Region Four Final against Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado on Saturday. A win would advance Central to the National Semifinals. The Wildcats rallied from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Bemidji. This is the first time Central has appeared in a Regional Final since 2009.
Central volleyball qualifies for Regional Meet
The CWU volleyball team qualified for the NCAA West Region Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday in San Bernardino.
High school winter sports get underway
The high school winter sports season gets underway this week. The defending state champion Ellensburg girls’ basketball team hosts Eastmont at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday with the boys’ matchup following at 7 p.m. The Kittitas boys’ basketball team welcomes La Salle at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is an open-faced turkey sandwich, peas and an apple. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
