Central to replace L&L Building

A construction project started on the Central Washington University campus this past week will result in the demolition of two buildings and the construction of a 106,000-square-foot four-story structure heated by a geothermal well by 2026. Fencing has gone up around the Language and Literature Building, which will be demolished as will Farrell Hall. The geothermal well will heat the new building and four others by harnessing renewable heat from the Ellensburg aquifer. The facility will cost an estimated $103.7 million.


Candy, Candy, Candy, I love you so

There are multiple opportunities to dress up, collect as much candy as possible and even enjoy of few frights on Halloween this Tuesday.

In Ellensburg, the downtown business district and CWU host events. The Downtown Trick or Treat Fest runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at participating businesses. This event is sponsored by the Ellensburg Downtown Association.

CWU hosts its annual Boo Central from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center Ballroom for children up to fifth grade. In addition to candy, CWU clubs will offer fun games and activities for kids and there will be a photo booth.

In the Upper County, Boo Elum takes place in downtown Cle Elum from 3 to 6 p.m. The Cle Elum-Roslyn High School Marching Band will lead trick-or-treaters from First Street and Wright Avenue to the Washington Federal Bank at 4 p.m.

Roslyn hosts Boo-tiful Roslyn from 3 to 5 p.m. with treats at participating businesses.


Jazz on campus Wednesday night

CWU Jazz Bands 1, 2 and 3 will perform at the CWU Bistro on campus from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday. Admission is free.


Event focuses on ending mental health stigma

CWU presents Hilinski’s Hope — Tyler’s Story: Ending Mental Health Stigma in Sport at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday in the SURC Theater. The Hilinski's Hope Foundation was founded in 2018 by Mark and Kym Hilinski to honor the life of their son Tyler, who died by suicide yet never showed any signs of depression or struggle. The program aims to save lives, eliminate mental health stigma and connect students with mental health resources.



Still time to register to vote

The last day to register to vote in the General Election or to transfer registration to a new address is Monday. Registration can be done online at votewa.gov or in person at the Kittitas County Auditor’s Office in the courthouse.


Take a scary drive

People can vote for their favorite Halloween homes during the Haunted House Driving Tour from Friday through Halloween. Ellensburg Community Radio has created a Halloween soundtrack to accompany the tour. The tour is being sponsored by Chamberlin Team Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Center Information on downloading the tour map and music playlist is on the Chamberlin Team Real Estate website.


SPORTS

Recap of high school football

In high school football this past weekend, Ellensburg lost to Ephrata, 13-0 on Friday, Easton fell to Clallam Bay. 52-6, on Friday, Cle Elum-Roslyn lost to Granger, 13-0 on Saturday, and Kittitas defeated White Swan, 46-8, on Thursday.


Cross country success

The Ellensburg High School boys and girls cross country teams both placed first in the District 5/6 Championship on Saturday. The Bulldogs next compete at the state meet on Saturday in Pasco.


Wildcats win on the road

The CWU football team defeated Texas A&M Kingville, 21-17, in Kingville on Saturday night, to remain undefeated in Lone Star Conference play. The win sets up a showdown with Texas Permian Basin, also undefeated in league, at noon, Nov. 11, in Midland Texas.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table lunch is loaded potato soup, garlic toast and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
