NEWS

Pertussis case at Ellensburg High School

A confirmed case of pertussis has been reported at Ellensburg High School, according to the Kittitas County Health Department. The case is associated with wrestling, and health officials are recommending that all wrestlers (male and female) along with any associated staff get tested for pertussis. Pertussis, also known as whopping cough, has been increasing in the state.  The illness can cause severe cough and can be especially dangerous for infants. Vaccinations for pertussis are called Dtap or Tdap.


City approves court services agreement

The Ellensburg City Council approved the contract for court-related services with Kittitas County. The contract provides court facilities, a judge, administrative staff, probation services, interpreters and court-appointed attorneys for indigent defendants. This past year, Kittitas County created a Department of Public Offense, hiring attorneys to represent indigent defendants. City Attorney Terry Weiner said due to that change, the city’s expenses will go up with a charge of $75,000 for the coming year. Weiner said that the charge will rise in the following years.


Winter Solstice Pause celebrates

The Community Labyrinth Project hosts a Winter Solstice Pause from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, at the Community Labyrinth at Grace Church. People can walk the labyrinth from 4 to 6 p.m. and then head inside the church for music, poetry and silence from 6 to 7 p.m. Donations for the project and the FISH Food Bank are welcome.


SPORTS

CWU men at home, women on the road

The Central Washington University men’s basketball team plays Lincoln of California at 7 p.m., tonight before taking a break until Jan. 4. The women’s team is in California this week playing Cal State Los Angeles at 5:30 p.m., today, and Biola at 2:30 p.m., Saturday. The women are then off until Jan. 2. The women’s team is ranked No. 24 in the Women’s Basketball Association Top 25 poll.


High school basketball on tap

In high school basketball this week the Cle Elum-Rolsyn girls host Napavine at 6 p.m., tonight. The Warrior boys and girls travel to Goldendale on Friday with the girls’ game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. The Ellensburg teams travel to play Prosser on Friday with the girls at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs host Grandview on Saturday with the girls at 3:30 p.m. and the boys at 5 p.m. Kittitas welcomes White Swan on Friday with the girls t 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. The Coyotes travel to Manson on Saturday with the girls at 3:30 p.m. and the boys at 5 p.m.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is pork pozole and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
