City approves jail contract with county

The Ellensburg City Council approved a contract to house inmates at the Kittitas County Corrections Center at Monday’s meeting. The contract rate is $110 a night for the next three years. The council put off approving the contract in November to hear more information on how the rate was established from Ellensburg Police Chief Ken Wade. Wade said the increase from the previous rate of $77 per night reflects cost increases but remains under the $178 a night it costs the county to house an inmate.


Celtic concert on Thursday

Irish band Everdream performs “A Celtic Christmas” at 7 p.m., tonight, in McConnell Auditorium. The concert features Celtic and Christmas classics, including "Danny Boy," "Silent Night," unique Irish Christmas songs, movie songs, toe-tapping jigs and reels and their chart-topping version of "O Holy Night." Tickets are $30 for general admission.

 

Choir by Candlelight on Friday night

The CWU Chamber Choir performs The Silence of Stars at 7 p.m. with pre-concert music at 6:40 p.m., Friday, in the United Methodist Church. The concert explores themes of the season with contemporary choral works, as well as music from a diversity of cultures and spiritual traditions, highlighting themes of sharing, giving, healing, peace, and strengthening community. Guest artist Tim Ribner from Portland is the featured collaborator. Tickets are $20 for general admission.

 

Christmas in Cle Elum is on Saturday

The Christmas in Cle Elum Lighted Parade is at 6 p.m., Saturday in downtown Cle Elum. The theme of the parade is Vintage Cle Elum. Visits with Santa are immediately after the parade.

 

Light Parade in Kittitas on Saturday

The annual Light Parade is Kittitas is at 6 p.m., Saturday. The parade is part of the Jingle and Mingle celebration which includes pictures with Santa from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, s’mores, hot dogs and hot chocolate from 5 to 7 p.m. at New Life Church and a dessert walk at the library following the parade.

 

CWU Theatre production continues

The Central Washington University Theatre production of “John Proctor is the Villian,” concludes with performances at 7:30 p.m., Friday, 7:30 p.m., Saturday a nd2 p.m., Sunday, in the Tower Theater. The play follows a group of high school students as they study Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Information on tickets and the times and dates of other performances is on the CWU Theatre Department website.


CWU Jazz Concerts are on Saturday

Central Washington University’s end-of-the-quarter jazz concerts are on Saturday in the McIntyre Music Building. An Afternoon of Jazz is at 4 p.m. and An Evening of Jazz is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission and provide entry to both concerts.


Symphony concert on Sunday

The CWU Symphony Orchestra Concert is 4 p.m., Sunday, in the McIntyre Music Building. Tickets are $15 for general admission.


SPORTS

Central volleyball opens tourney play

The CWU volleyball team plays Point Loma at 11 a.m., today in Pomona, California in the first round of the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. A victory advances the Wildcats to play the winner of the Cal Poly Pomona-Simon Fraser match on Friday.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is spaghetti with meatballs, green beans and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
