The Walk turns 25

Ellensburg’s First Friday Art Walk enters its 25th year with a list of venues celebrating artists starting at 5 p.m., Friday. There are venues in restaurants, hotels, businesses and galleries throughout the city, with some featuring music as well.


Monday is the deadline for city council position

Monday is the final day to apply for the open Ellensburg City Council Position 3 seat. The vacancy was created by Adam Winn’s resignation. The City Council will interview candidates at a special meeting at 6 p.m., Feb. 12. Applicants must be registered voters within the city of Ellensburg and have lived within the city for the past year. Application information is available on the city's website.


Sand and bags available

As the weather warms this week and snow melts, Ellensburg and Kittitas provide free sand and bags. Locations in Ellensburg are Wippel Park, Seventh Avenue and Cascade Street and Kiwanis Park. The Kittitas location is Gazebo Park on the corner of Third and Pierce. People need to bring their own shovels.


Member or Exonerated Five to speak at Central

Raymond Santana, one of five African-American teenagers wrongfully convicted of a violent attack in New York’s Central Park in 1989, will speak at CWU at 6:30 tonight, at the McIntyre Music Building. Santana and four other teens served between five and 13 years in prison before their convictions were overturned in 2002 when DNA evidence linked a convicted murderer and serial rapist to the crime, for which he confessed. The event is free.

 

Sip and support Habitat for Humanity

Kittitas County Habitat for Humanity is holding an Uncorked: Sip and Support fundraiser at Valo Cellars in Kittitas at 5 p.m., Thursday. During the event, 20 percent of wine proceeds will go to Habitat.

 

Kairos performs lunch concert

Kairos and Friends perform at the First Friday Lunch Concert at noon, Friday at Hal Holmes Community Center. The 40-minute concert features CWU music professors, students and community members performing various short pieces.

 

Valley Musical Theatre production opens Friday

The Valley Musical Theatre Winter Play production of “The Odd Couple,” opens at 7 p.m. Friday in the Ramsey Ballroom. The play continues with performances on Saturday and Sunday and on Feb. 8, 9 and 10. Jessica Horrocks and Jessica Solberg Black direct the play and it features Riley Newman as Oscar and Patrick Nolan as Felix.

 

SPORTS

CWU basketball player honored

CWU men’s basketball player Samaad Hector was named the GNAC Player of the Week. Hector averaged 20 points a game in the Wildcats’ victories over Western Washington and Simon Fraser this past. Central is on the road with games at Seattle Pacific tonight and at Montana St.-Billings on Saturday.   

 

EHS wrestlers compete in district meet

The Ellensburg High School wrestling team competes at its district tournament Friday in the Yakima SunDome. Competition gets underway at 9 a.m. District is the qualifying tournament for next weekend’s regional meet.

 

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is ham and bean soup, garlic toast and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
