Kittitas Elementary School to reopen

The Kittitas Elementary School reopens today after two days of closure, but Kittitas Secondary School will remain closed. On Friday, secondary school students will have a virtual learning day, similar to what was done during the COVID lockdown. Parents and students will receive instructions on the virtual learning effort today. The closures were a result of a water line break in the fire suppression system.

 

Investigation leads to arrest

The Ellensburg Police Department reports that a two-month investigation results in the arrest of an Ellensburg woman for three counts of delivery of methamphetamine. The woman was booked into the county jail.


Council rejects bids for Pfenning Road shared use pathway

The Ellensburg City rejected 11 bids on the Pfenning Road shared-use project because the bids either irregularities in the submitted bids or because the bids came in over the project budget. The project will go back out to bid this week and public works staff said they will work with contractors to better meet the document requirements. Part of the project is to construct as shared-use pathway on the west side of Pfenning Road from Third Avenue to the Palouse to Cascades Trail.

 

Night of Remembrance at CWU

Central Washington University will present a Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Event at 6 p.m., today in the Student Union Theatre. The event will feature spoken-word performances, gospel singing by the Carter Sisters from Yakima and an inspirational address by Mal Stewman. Admission is free and open to the public.

 

Ellensburg Library celebrates birthday

The Ellensburg Public Library celebrates its 114th birthday with an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday. The open house will include music, children’s storytime, tours and cake. The original Ellensburg Library was a Carnegie Public Library that was opened in 1910 and served the community until 1966.

 

Centerfuse adds new board member

Dawn Alford has been appointed to the board of directors for Centerfuse —the Business Development Authority for Ellensburg. Alford is the president and CEO of Circa 9021 Communications and previously served as director of strategic communication and digital media at CWU.

 

Civics Bee deadline extended

The deadline for the National Civics Bee competition has been extended to Jan. 22. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce is one of six organizations hosting a local bee. The competition is open to middle school-aged students. The in-person will be on April 6 in Ellensburg. Registration information is available on the chamber’s website.

 

Free youth art classes

Free youth art classes will be offered for kids age 11 to 17 starting on Feb. 6. The classes, sponsored by Northwest Expressive Art Response and the Kittitas County Health Network, will be offered from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. every first and third Tuesday at the United Methodist Church Classroom 1. Activities will include mask making, sand play, clay work, poetry and more.

 

Central Choir to perform at conference

The CWU Chamber Choir will perform at the American Choral Directors Association Northwest Conference at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in Spokane. The choir was one of six in the nation selected to perform “In Time of Silver Rain,” by Andre Thomas.

 

Guided snowshoe hikes offered

Guided snowshoe hikes are offered at the Easton Reload Sno-Park beginning at 9 a.m. each Saturday and at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays this winter. People are asked to come prepared with waterproof boots, snowshoes and warm clothes. The hikes last about 90 minutes and are over easy, beginner-level terrain. No registration is required.

 

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is pork pozole with tortilla strips, sour cream and cotija cheese, and an orange. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
