Cle Elum to pursue bankruptcy
The Cle Elum City Council authorized the mayor to pursue Chapter 9 bankruptcy proceedings at Tuesday night's special meeting. The city faces a $22.2 million judgment against it relating to delays with the City Heights development. City Heights is a planned 950-home project on the ridge line north of downtown Cle Elum. The council has discussed bankruptcy for the past two months. At Tuesday’s meeting City Heights representatives asked the city not to pursue bankruptcy, but with the debt earning 12 percent interest the council opted to start the bankruptcy process. The only Washington city to declare bankruptcy was North Bonneville in Skamania County in 1991.
