Unity Park timeline moved up
Due to favorable weather conditions, the city of Ellensburg moved up the start date for Unity Park construction to Feb. 22. Construction includes the demolition of the former drive-through banking structure. There will be intermittent closures along Pearl Street and Fourth Avenue during construction. The Bull statue will be removed and then returned upon completion of the park.
Event connects volunteers
Ellensburg Downtown Association is hosting an event to connect volunteers with the perfect match organization. Volunteer Speed Dating will take place at 5:30 p.m., Thursday at the EDA office on Third Avenue.
DOJ investigators in town today
As part of the federal Department of Justice’s investigation of the Ellensburg School District, DOJ personnel will be in town from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the IOOF Oddfellows Lodge on Pine Street to meet with anyone about the district’s response to harassment and other forms of discrimination against students based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, race and national origin.
“Odd Couple” production continues
The Valley Musical Theatre production of “The Odd Couple” returns for its final weekend of performances starting tonight and continuing on Friday and Saturday at the Ramsey Center and Ballroom, located on the second floor of the Clymer Museum. Ticket information is available on the Valley Musical Theatre’s website.
CWU Music Faculty showcased
The CWU Music Winter Faculty Showcase is at 7 p.m., Friday at the McIntyre Music Building. The event features music faculty showcasing their talents to raise money for students. The showcase is free but donations are accepted with all proceeds going to music student programs.
Lunar Lunch feast Friday
A free Lunar New Year luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday at the Upper Kittitas County Senior Center. The Lunar New Year Luncheon provides an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the tapestry of cultures, traditions, and backgrounds that contribute to Upper Kittitas County.
Kickoff Super Bowl weekend with fundraiser
The Ellensburg Education Foundation’s annual Super Bowl Warm-Up Fundraiser starts at 5 p.m., Friday at Teanaway Hall at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. The event includes dinner from Ellensburg Pasta Company, a silent auction, games and trivia contests. Money raised supports the Foundation’s Learning Enhancement Awards. Ticket information is available on the Foundation’s website.
Learn to line dance in Thorp
The Thorp School Booster Club is hosting Family Line Dancing at 6 p.m., Friday at the Thorp School. Professional dance instructor Gillian Redman will teach three different line dances. Tickets for dancing are $5 and the Thorp Junior Class offers a chili dog dinner for $6.
Cattle drive on Saturday
The annual Eaton family cattle drive takes place Saturday in the Yakima River Canyon. Drivers can expect delays on state Route 821 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and are encouraged to travel on Interstate 82 during that time. The cattle are moved from one pasture 10 miles north of Selah to another pasture 15 miles north of Selah.
Over-the-TOPera set for Saturday
Music fans can celebrate and support opera at the Over the TOPera event at 7 p.m., Saturday at the McIntyre Music Building. The concert showcases the work of students in learning and perfecting operatic aria repertoire. Tickets are $15 for general admission and the proceeds support future CWU opera productions.
SPORTS
Doubleheader basketball action
CWU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams play at home tonight. The women face Simon Fraser at 5:15 p.m. and the men take the court against Alaska Fairbanks at 7:30 p.m.
EHS basketball in district playoffs
The Ellensburg High School girls’ basketball team plays the winner of East Valley vs. Grandview, at 7 p.m., Friday in Nicholson Pavilion, in the district playoffs.
EHS wrestling hosts state Regional championship
Ellensburg High School hosts the Class 2A Region IV Wrestling championship starting at 10 a.m., Saturday. Wrestlers who qualify in the Regional meet advance to the State Mat Classic, starting Feb. 16 at the Tacoma Dome.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is vegetarian lentil soup, cornbread and an apple. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
