Tour the possibilities

The Ellensburg Downtown Association is hosting a tour of available downtown storefront space starting at the EDA office of Third Avenue at 5:30 p.m., today. The tour showcases vacant storefronts in the downtown district. The tour is free but registration is required at the EDA’s website.

 

Open Show head lines First Friday

This month’s First Friday Art Walk includes Gallery One’s annual Kittitas County Open Show. The show features art submitted by county residents. This year’s juror, Betsy Fetherston, will distribute $3800 in awards donated by local businesses and individuals, including a purchase award by the City of Ellensburg and a residency award at Gallery One. First Friday is from 5 to 7 p.m. at venues throughout downtown Ellensburg.

 

Market season starts

The Ellensburg Farmers Market opens for the season on Saturday. The market is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continues on Saturdays through the end of October.

 

Garage and plant sale in Thorp

The Thorp Community Day Yard and Plant Sale is Friday and Saturday at the Thorp Fire Station. The plant-only sale is from 1 to 4 p.m., Friday. The plant and garage vendors’ sale is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

 

Teams compete in Flyby Challenge

More than 30 student teams from across the region will participate in the Lunar Fly-by In-Person Challenge on the CWU campus Friday and Saturday. Northwest Earth and Space Science Pathways sponsors the challenge. Teams will tackle eight mission objectives, inspired by NASA's Artemis Missions, which aims to return humans to the moon.

 

Historic preservation awards on Monday

Historic Preservation Awards will be handed out at 4 p.m., Saturday at the Kittitas County Historical Museum. The event, sponsored by the museum at the city’s Landmark and Design Commission, includes a presentation on the 135th anniversary of the great fire, a celebration of community murals and the naming of award winners honored for preserving historic homes and structures.

 

University Way overlay project starts Monday

The University Way overlay projects begins Monday. Roadway surface maintenance will be done on University Way from Cle Elum Street to the BNSF Overpass near Reecer Creek. The project includes day and nighttime work and is expected to take two months to complete.

 

Community meeting in Cle Elum

A community meeting to discuss proposed commercial sewer rate increases in Cle Elum will be at 6 p.m., May 9 in the City Council Chambers. This will be an open discussion with the mayor and city council.

 

SPORTS

CWU football’s annual Crimson and Black Spring Game is at noon, Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.  There will be four 15-minute running clock quarters with no official statistics being kept. Admission is free. The game precedes CWU’s Athletics Hall of Fame Gala at 4 p.m. at Nicholson Pavilion. This year’s Hall of Fame class consists of Johnny Spevak, Shaina Afoa, Greg Olson, and James and Katie Gaudino.

 

LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Minestrone soup, and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
