NEWS

City advances housing proposal

The City Council the first reading of a rezoning that could lead to the construction of a multifamily, multistory building complex on Airport Road, north of the intersection of Helena Street. The parcel, owned by Dan Shissler and Martha Kurts, would be rezoned from residential suburban to residential high. The city’s Hearing Examiner recommended approval of the rezone. The council will hold a second and final reading of the rezone ordinance at its next meeting.


Legislators hold town hall.

Thirteenth District legislators Sen. Judy Warnick and Rep. Tom Dent, and Kittitas County Commissioner Laura Osiadacz will hold a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Easton School.


Candidate forums set for next week

Two candidate forums will be held next week in Kittitas County. A forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cle Elum Centennial Center on Oct. 14. The Ellensburg forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 15 at Hal Holmes Community Center. The events are sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County, the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Clubs of Upper Kittitas County.


Concert at Central on Friday

A New Music Festival Composition Concert will be at the McIntyre Music Building Recital Hall at 7 p.m., Friday. Concerts also are scheduled for 10 a.m., 4 and 7 p.m., Saturday, and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Sunday. All performances are free and open to the public.


Prescribed burn planned Roslyn Urban Forest

A prescribed burn is planned in the Roslyn Urban Forest on Thursday. UKC Fuels and the state Department of Natural Resources will conduct the burn. All trails in and above the eastern portion of the urban forest will be closed to all uses.

 

Volunteers needed for Cold Weather Shelter

Volunteers are needed for this winter’s Cold Weather Shelter. The shelter will be located in the Western Village adjacent to the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena and will be operated by HopeSource. Training times are available. Information is on the HopeSource Facebook page.


Lumberjack competition this weekend

The PNW Timberfest-Pro Lumberjack competition takes place Friday through Sunday at Iron Horse Brewery. Competition times are 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. Top athletes competed against each other in a series of events.


Mountain Ale Festival is Saturday

The Roslyn Mountain Ale Festival is 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, at the Roslyn Yard. There will be breweries from throughout the Pacific Northwest and live music. This is a 21-plus event and tickets are $40 with a commemorative glass and tasting scrip, or $10 just for the entertainment.


SPORTS

High school teams compete today

In high school athletics today, the Ellensburg volleyball team travels to play Ephrata at 6 p.m. The Cle Elum-Roslyn volleyball team hosts La Salle at 6:30 p.m. The Cle Elum cross country team is at a meet at Tri Cities Prep at 4 p.m., and the Kittitas volleyball team hosts Goldendale at 6:30 p.m.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is beef Stroganoff and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 67 degrees. Sunset is at 6:23 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 35 degrees. Winds will be 5 to 10 mph.
