CWU to conduct alert test

CWU Emergency Management will conduct a CWU Alert! Test today. The CWU Alert! system notifies students, staff, and faculty of emergencies that impact the operation of the Ellensburg campus, including campus closures and delays. The notification system automatically sends text, email, and phone messages using the information in the MyCWU "Personal Details" section.


Civics Bee winners advance

Megan Meador placed first in the regional Civics Bee competition held at Hal Holmes Community Center on Saturday. Noelle Liapis placed second and Carly Andrews third. All three are Ellensburg Christian School middle school students and advance to the state competition in Olympia in June. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the local event.


Ballots have been mailed

Ballots for the April 23 special election were mailed to county voters last week. The only issue on the ballot is the KITTCOM Emergency Communications and Facilities Sales and Use Tax. This proposal would raise sales tax by two-tenths of 1 percent to help meet KITTCOM facility and operations needs.


Dru Bru hosts Chamber After Hours

The Dru Bru Taproom and Brewery in Cle Elum hosts Chamber After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday. Wellness is the industry focus, and all wellness-related businesses are invited to join. The event is free and open to the public.


Learn to derby

A session in the Rodeo City Roller Derby’s free Roller Derby 101 is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday at Ellensburg High School. Expert instructors teach roller derby basics.


Law and Justice Career Fair is Wednesday

More than 80 agencies will participate in the Law and Justice Career Fair from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday in the SURC Ballroom. The fair is sponsored by CWU’s Department and Law and Justice. The event is free and open to the public.

 

Lion Rock features Callum Angus

CWU’s Lion Rock Visiting Writer Series features trans writer and editor Callum Angus on Thursday in the CWU Brooks Library Student Commons.  There will be a craft talk at noon and Angus will read from his story collection, “A Natural History in Transition,” at 6 p.m.

 

Juried art exhibit opens

CWU’s Juried Undergraduate Student Art and Design Exhibition opens on Thursday at the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery in Randall Hall. There is a reception at 5 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. This year’s jurors, who select the artwork for the exhibit and assign several awards, are Olivia Lane and Karl Schwiesow. Lane works for Seattle-based design Tether. Schwiesow is the director of the Palace Gallery in Ellensburg. The exhibit remains through May 4.

 

CWU opera opens on Thursday

CWU’s production of the classic opera, Die Fledermaus, debuts at 7 p.m., Thursday in McConnell Auditorium. The opera will be performed in English and include a host of modern touches. The opera continues with shows at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20 for general admission.

 

LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is biscuit chicken pot pie and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
