About 5,000 homes have been evacuated and about 600 homes, businesses and other buildings have been destroyed by wildfires that remained uncontained Sunday in eastern Washington state, authorities said. The fires burned more than 8.2 square miles (about 21 square kilometers) around Spokane, the second largest city in Washington, and were among dozens across the western U.S. — stretching the ability of federal, state and local agencies to fight them.
Today is the last day to turn in your August 2026 primary election ballot. Dropbox locations include: Roslyn City Hall/Library, South Cle Elum Town Hall, Cle Elum - Upper District Court, Easton Fire Station, Ronald Fire Station #1, Thorp Fire Station #1, Central Washington University, Kittitas County Courthouse and Kittitas City Hall. Election results will be released by the Kittitas County Auditor after 8 p.m. tonight.
U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier visited Cle Elum last week to talk with officials from HopeSource and Kittitas County’s emergency operations. She made her first stop to meet with HopeSource at its construction site for Teanaway Court, an affordable housing development that will consist of 41 units and a 66-seat daycare.
The Master Gardener Plant Diagnostic Clinic takes place today at 11:30 AM at the Armory.

Inland Poetry will host a poetry reading and open mic on Thursday at Club 301 in Ellensburg. Featured readers at the PiE (Poetry in Ellensburg) event are Seattle poets/musicians John Burgess and Jed Myers. The reading starts at 6 p.m. The open mic will follow, with a limit of 301 seconds at the microphone (doors open at 5:30 for sign-ups).

WHAT'S FOR LUNCH AT THE FISH OPEN TABLE?
The FISH Open Table lunch schedule is not out for August but we know the senior lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ellensburg Open Table at 204 North Main Street, and noon to 1 p.m. at the Cle Elum Seventh Day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg Open Table.
