Kittitas schools closed for water-line break
Due to a water line break in the fire suppression system, the Kittitas Elementary and Secondary schools will be closed today, according to Kittitas school officials. The extreme weather conditions are also causing a problem with getting the appropriate agencies and companies to respond to the break. School officials will announce regarding Wednesday by midday today.

Weather advisory this afternoon
A winter weather advisory has been issued for Kittitas County, starting at 4 p.m. today and continuing through 7 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service forecast calls for mixed precipitation with two to four inches of snow and ice accumulations.

Hear about the State of the Community
The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce presents a State of the Community Address at 5:30 p.m. today at the Hotel Windrow. It will be an opportunity to hear from local elected officials and a panel representing local youth programs.

City Council meets tonight
Due to Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the Ellensburg City Council is meeting at 7 p.m., tonight, in Council Chambers. Included on the agenda is the adoption of the city’s Sustainability and Energy Plan.

Pack the Pantry continues
CWU’s Pack the Pantry effort to stock the campus food bank continues this week with a focus on food allergies. Donations of gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan non-perishable items are encouraged. Almost every academic and professional building on campus has a donation box. Pack the Pantry features a weekly theme throughout January.

Night of Remembrance at CWU
Central Washington University will present a Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Event at 6 p.m., Thursday in the Student Union Theatre. The event will feature spoken-word performances, gospel singing by the Carter Sisters from Yakima and an inspirational address by Mal Stewman. Admission is free and open to the public.

Take part in the Challenge
Registration is open for the 2024 Enterprise Challenge — an annual business plan competition for companies within Kittitas and Yakima counties. Registration closes on Feb. 2, and the competition runs from Feb. 6 to April 18. More information is available on the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce website.

Ellensburg Library celebrates its birthday
The Ellensburg Public Library celebrates its 114th birthday with an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday. The open house will include music, children’s storytime, tours and cake. The original Ellensburg Library was a Carnegie Public Library that was opened in 1910 and served the community until 1966.

High school basketball on Tuesday
The Ellensburg High School basketball teams host Grandview today. The girls’ game tips off at 5:30 p.m. and the boys take the court at 7 p.m. The Cle Elum-Roslyn teams travel to Cashmere today with the girls’ game at 5:45 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 7:15 p.m.

Central track star sets school record
CWU’s Johan Correa set the school record for the indoor 3,000-meter race at the Spokane Invitational this past weekend. Correa finished second in the race with a time of 8:23.22. Among other Wildcats, Ellensburg High School graduate Wyatt Franklin placed seventh in the shot put.

The FISH Open Table Lunch is beef Stroganoff, mixed vegetables and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
