Down at the Hal Holmes Community Center last week, a beaded lizard named Tepe made some new friends and made a few kids squirm. Dan Beck, a retired CWU biology professor, brought the 11-year-old reptile in for two shows as part of the Ellensburg Public Library's summer reading program. The program, called Unearth a Story, runs through August. Next up is an all-ages show, Tricks and Tales with Leapin' Louie, at 11:15 tomorrow morning at the library.

NEWS

The Yakima Training Center has new rules for hunters this season. The policy took effect June 1 and caps the number of people who can hunt on the military installation at 15 at any one time, a change meant to prevent overcrowding. Shooting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 4:30 in the afternoon, and everyone has to be off the grounds by then. Access control staff start processing hunters and other recreational users at 5 a.m. Saturday, August 1. Anyone heading out needs a valid driver's license or passport, proof of current vehicle insurance, and registration.

A Central Washington University graduate is opening doors for kids who grew up like he did. Jose Iniguez, who was raised in an orchard in Mattawa, once dreamed of singing professionally without much support to get there. Now he runs Encanto Arts, and its new summer academy offers free bilingual piano and voice lessons to students from farmworker and low-income families, from beginners on up.

And a local student is being recognized for hitting the books. Austin Wickerath of Ellensburg has been honored for academic achievement at the University of Wyoming, earning a spot on the 2026 spring semester dean's honor roll. The honor roll recognizes undergraduates above freshman standing who earned a 3.4 grade-point average or better, and freshmen who earned a 3.25 or better.

A few things to do around town today. The 2026 Northwest Carving Academy continues at 8 this morning at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. And the Master Gardeners hold their Plant Diagnostic Clinic at 11:30 at The Armory, so bring your ailing tomatoes and garden questions. Looking ahead, Valley Theatre Company opens "The Addams Family" musical Thursday night at 7 at the Morgan Performing Arts Center.
