Hot-enough-to-fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk weather is expected much of this week in Kittitas County.

Kittitas County under an excessive heat warning

Kittitas Country is under an excessive heat warning through 10 p.m. Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, the high in Ellensburg will be near 106 today and 99 on Wednesday. High temperatures will remain in the mid to high 90s for the week.


Burn ban in lower valley

A burn ban for the lower Kittitas Valley goes into effect today. The ban encompasses Kittitas Valley Fire and Rescue, Kittitas Fire District 1 in Thorp and Kittitas Fire District 4 in Vantage. The ban prohibits opening burning. Propane and gas stoves and charcoal barbecues are still allowed. The Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to monitor current conditions and modify the burn ban as necessary.


Book Mobile hits the road

The Ellensburg Bookmobile makes the rounds each Tuesday evening in July. Starting at 5 p.m., the bookmobile stops at Millpond, Crestview Apartments on Alder Street, Rainier Street and the Hillside Mobile Park on Cascade Way. Kids in grades K to 8 can check out up to three books.


Historic run planned for Wednesday

The Ellensburg Public Library Summer Reading Program sponsors a historical running tour at 7 p.m., Wednesday. The tour includes three stops at historical locations. Participants are invited to run, write and learn about the city. A leisurely pace is promised with the mile route spread out over 45 to 60 minutes. Preregistration at the library is required.


Grab and Go lunches in the heat

Due to excessive heat, grab-and-go lunches will be distributed at FISH’s Picnic in the Park program through Wednesday. Lunches are distributed at 12 locations throughout Kittitas County.


Hula hoop in park

This week’s youth Summer Reading Program activity is Hillia Hoop at the Park at 10 a.m., Wednesday at Mountain View Park. Hillia Hula will tell a tale, use hula hoop dancing and tricks, and teach a few hula hoop tricks.


Ida Nason Aronica Elementary honored

Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School was named one of the inaugural winners of the Washington Schools on the Rise Award from the Association of Washington School Principals. The award honored 20 schools in the state that worked to implement a culture focused on student-adult collaboration to benefit overall school culture and student voice to build an inclusive and equitable school environment for all students.


Surplus sales this week

There are two public surplus sales this week. The city of Roslyn’s sealed-bid surplus sale is Thursday through Saturday. Information is at City Hall. Items for sale include a 1982 Ford Fire Truck. Central Washington University’s surplus sale is Thursday through Saturday at surplus warehouse on 14th Avenue and B Street. Items for sale include a LaMarzocco espresso machine.


“Anastasia: The Musical” opens Friday

The Valley Theatre production of “Anastasia: The Musical” premieres at 7 p.m., Friday at Morgan Performing Arts Center. The play tells the story of what became of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. Performances are scheduled for 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 7 p.m., July 19 and 2 and 7 p.m., July 20.  Tickets are $20 for general admission and are available on the Valley Theatre website.


Chamber After-Hours Event at Cle Elum Back 9

This month’s Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce After-Hours event is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cle Elum Back 9, located behind Basecamp Outfitters on East First Street in Cle Elum. Cle Elum Back 9 features an aboutGolf simulator.


Candidate forums scheduled

Primary candidate forums will be held in Ellensburg on July 16 and Cle Elum on July 17. The Ellensburg forum will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and Hal Holmes Community Center and the Cle Elum forum is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Center. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters of Kittitas County sponsor the events.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is hard-shell tacos, corn and bean salad and mixed fruit. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 106 degrees. Sunset is at 8:57 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 72 degrees. Winds will be 10 to 20 mph.
