NEWS

Kittitas County Commissioner Cory Wright announced his resignation yesterday to accept the position of Executive Director of the Kittitas County Economic Development Partnership, a new countywide organization focused on strengthening economic opportunity across Kittitas County. Wright's resignation takes effect July 31, ending more than eight years on the Board of County Commissioners. Wright called the move "a continuation of public service, not a step away from it," and said economic development touches nearly every issue facing the county — from family-wage jobs and housing to broadband, childcare, and downtown revitalization. The process for filling the commissioner vacancy will proceed under Washington state law.

A Yakima County Superior Court judge set bail at $25,000 for Kittitas County Sheriff Deputy Nicholas Burson, who was arrested after allegedly pointing a pistol at people outside the Brick Saloon in Roslyn early Sunday morning. Burson, 40, faces three potential counts of second-degree assault with a firearm and official misconduct. Judge Jeffery Swan stressed Burson would receive no favoritism as a law enforcement officer and ordered him to have no alcohol and no contact with the alleged victims. His arraignment is set for June 18.

Kittitas County Public Works crews will begin the annual chip seal program on county roads starting the week of June 25th, continuing through the end of July depending on weather. Chip sealing involves applying hot asphalt oil covered with rock to extend the life of road surfaces. Drivers should expect delays and reduced speeds in work zones. The full schedule of locations is available on the Kittitas County Public Works website.

The City of Ellensburg has released its 2026 Annual Water Quality Report, which shows the city's drinking water meets or exceeds all state and federal standards. The report covers monitoring results from 2023 through 2025. Residents with questions can contact the Water Division at 509-962-7230.
