Say goodbye to the Nites Inn. Construction is underway on Pathways Place, HopeSource's new affordable housing project on South Ruby Street. The old motel is being reworked into a 78-unit development, with 32 studios, 30 one-bedrooms, and 16 two-bedroom apartments. Half the units will go to households earning 30 percent of the area median income, and half to households at 50 percent. The city of Ellensburg and Kittitas County both helped fund the site purchase. A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3rd at 1200 South Ruby Street.
Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School is offering a free, full-day summer program for kids going into second through fifth grade. It's called DiscoverWorks. Sixty-three students are already signed up. The program runs June 22nd through July 30th and includes daily math and reading, breakfast, lunch, snacks, plus arts, science, sports, and field trips. Ellensburg is one of the few districts in Washington picked for the pilot year. Families should contact the school for registration details.
The city of Ellensburg cuts the ribbon Wednesday on the new playground at West Ellensburg Park. The ceremony is at 4 p.m. at the park, 900 West Third Avenue. It's the first new playground built in town since 2012. The Ellensburg Morning Rotary Club kicked in $20,000 toward the equipment and helped install it back in April. The total project came in just over $200,000, paid for with the city's Real Estate Excise Tax fund for parks. The playground includes inclusive play features, swings for all ages, a merry-go-round, and a large play structure.
The city is still looking for residents to serve on advisory boards and commissions. Open seats include the Arts Commission, the DEI Commission, the Planning Commission, the Utility Advisory Committee, the Civil Service Commission, the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, and the LEOFF Board. Some have current vacancies, others have terms expiring May 31st. Applications are at ellensburgwa.gov/apply.
And a heads up for fairgoers: the Kittitas County Fair is considering a bulk ticket discount this year. More details are expected as the fair board works out the offer.
