NEWS

In Cle Elum, the city's license plate cameras kept running for a day after the city's contract with Flock Safety ended on September 30th. The City Council voted not to renew the contract at a special meeting on September 28th. Councilmember Steven Harper said at that meeting he couldn't support renewal without stronger controls on how the company's data is used. Police Chief Rich Albo told the Daily Record he didn't know the cameras were still on until October 1st. He said all five cameras in the city were covered with garbage bags within about two hours, and they'll stay covered until Flock removes them.

The city is taking proposals from groups that help people find housing or stay housed. Up to one hundred fifty thousand dollars a year is available from the city's affordable housing sales tax. The money can go to things like homelessness prevention, rapid rehousing, and onsite services at supportive housing. Programs have to serve Ellensburg households earning up to 60 percent of area median income. Proposals received after this Saturday, October 31st, may be funded in 2027.

More than 1,500 people answered a city survey in June about how they use the Kittitas Valley Memorial Pool and Fitness Center, and what they'd like to see in a future aquatic facility. The Daily Record reports the results are now in and show what residents want most.

Election Day is a week from today, Tuesday, November 3rd. The Daily Record has been covering candidate forums in the races for county prosecutor, sheriff, and coroner. That includes Hammond and Reiman for prosecutor, and Kokjer and Chepoda for sheriff.

And some Ellensburg High School students got hands-on this month. Construction students and SkillsUSA club members helped build paths, move rocks, and put a fire-protective coating on KEEN's educational yurts at Pond to Pines in Helen McCabe State Park, near the Yakima Canyon, according to the Daily Record.

ROAD UPDATES

If you're driving downtown, watch for work near Third Avenue. The alley between Third and Fourth avenues and Sampson and Anderson streets has been closed since October 12th for a sewer main replacement. City crews estimated about fifteen days of work. Third Avenue was also closed for a sewer connection, and is set to reopen once that work is done. For questions, call Public Works at five-oh-nine, nine-six-two, seven-two-three-oh.
