School is back in session
School is back in session this week in Kittitas County with grades 1st through 12th returning to the classroom. Wednesday is the first day of school in the Ellensburg, Kittitas, Cle Elum-Rolsyn, Damman and Easton school districts. Thursday is the first day of school in the Thorp School District. Kindergarten schedules vary from district to district.
Ellensburg City Council meets tonight
Due to the Labor Day holiday, the Ellensburg City Council meets at 7 p.m., tonight, in City Council Chambers. The meeting includes a closed record hearing to consider adopting the Foster North Preliminary Plat. Foster North would create 265 residential lots on 80 acres north of Dry Creek Road and east of Reecer Creek Road.
Bear specialists to speak in Rolsyn
State Department of Fish and Wildlife bear specialists will speak at a presentation from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the Masonic Hall, next to the Roslyn Post Office. Information on bear behavior and safety tips for living in bear country will be shared.
Vantage Bridge traffic restricted
Starting today, traffic in both directions on Vantage Bridge will be restricted to one narrow lane in each direction. These specific restrictions will be in place until November. The bridge project is expected to take several years.
Poet laureate deadline is Sept. 15
The deadline for applying to be the city’s Poet Laureate is Sept. 15. The Poet Laureate is a two-year position that builds awareness and appreciation of poetry through public readings, workshops, lectures, and presentations. Laureates perform this work often in partnership with other organizations throughout the region, fostering a sense of community collaboration and belonging through the power of poetry. Applications are available on the city’s website and at City Hall.

CWU rugby star drafted
The Seattle Seawolves drafted Central Washington University rugby player Calvin Liulamaga in the first round of the Major League Rugby draft. With Liulamaga's selection, the Wildcats have had a first-round pick in three of the past five MLR Collegiate Drafts.
High school football kicks off Friday
High school football seasons starts Friday night for three of Kittitas County’s teams. Ellensburg hosts Othello at 7 p.m. Kittitas welcomes Granger at 7 p.m. Cle Elum-Roslyn hosts Manson at 7 p.m. Easton’s football team opens on Sept. 14 at Clallam Bay.
CWU teams open season
CWU’s fall sports teams open their seasons on the road this week. The women’s volleyball team plays Metro State in an invitational at Western Washington University on Thursday. The Wildcats face San Francisco State in Bellingham on Friday. The women’s soccer team plays Point Loma in San Diego on Saturday. The football team also is in San Diego, taking on the University of San Diego at 1 p.m., Saturday.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is Minestrone and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
