Fire crews east of Snoqualmie Pass are bracing for a warmer, drier stretch this week after several days of cool, wet weather slowed all three wildfires burning north of Lake Kachess. The Three Queens Fire stands at just over nine thousand four hundred acres and is 12 percent contained. The King Fire, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, has grown to about thirty-one hundred acres with no containment yet. The Goat Fire is holding at a little over eight hundred acres and is three percent contained. About 550 people are working the fires, with sixteen engines, forty-three pieces of heavy equipment and five helicopters. Crews spent the weekend building contingency line from the Morgan and Newport Creek areas east toward Teanaway West Fork Road, and working a control line between Kachess and Cle Elum lakes. Fire managers say temperatures near eighty degrees by tomorrow will dry out lighter fuels, and they expect fire activity to pick up. Level 3, Level 2 and Level 1 evacuation orders are all still in place. The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office recently stepped several areas down a level, including the cabins along Baker Lane and the stretch between Kachess and Cle Elum lakes. Current evacuation boundaries are on the county's live evacuation map, and the forest closure is still on — a lower evacuation level does not reopen the woods.
The Ellensburg City Council meets tonight at City Hall, 501 North Anderson Street. Councilmembers hold a study session at 6 o'clock, where no formal action is taken and no public comment is heard, then the regular meeting begins at 7. You can attend in person, join by Zoom, or watch live on the ECTV YouTube channel. Anyone who wants to comment remotely on a non-agenda item has to register in advance.
Kittitas County Commissioners will decide next week whether to keep the county's data center moratorium in place another six months. That hearing is Tuesday, September 15th at 2 p.m. in the Commissioners' Auditorium at the courthouse, 205 West 5th Avenue. Written comments will be taken before the hearing. The commissioners have a full afternoon that day — they'll also take up a lease with Central Washington University for property at Bowers Field, the county airport, and a renewal of the Conservation District's rates and charges.
Two things happening around town today. The Chamber of Commerce holds Chamber After Hours at 5 o'clock this evening at Collective Interiors downtown. And the Harvest Place Speaker Series continues at 6:30 tonight at the Family Christian Center.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Sunset Market summer series returns to Unity Park at 5 p.m., and there's open mic night at Valo Cellars at 6.
A note on the roads. Guardrail repairs begin tomorrow morning at two intersections on Reecer Creek Road — at University Way and at Highway 10. Crews will work during daylight hours and expect to be finished by the weekend. There are no detours, but flaggers will be out, so give yourself extra time through there. The city says the repairs are being paid for by the insurance carriers for the drivers who damaged the guardrails.
SPORTS
Central Washington opened its season over the weekend. The Wildcat cross country team swept its home opener Saturday, taking first in both the men's and women's races. The football team fell at Cal Poly, 24 to 17.
This week, volleyball travels to Burnaby, British Columbia Thursday to face number nineteen Simon Fraser at 7 p.m. Cross country runs at the WSU Cougar Classic in Colfax on Friday at 5:30.
Saturday is the first big football game. CWU hosts top-ranked Ferris State in Ellensburg at 6 p.m. Volleyball is up north the same night, at number twenty-four Western Washington in Bellingham at 7.
And Sunday, women's soccer is in Seattle for a 4 p.m. match.
WEATHER
The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 77 degrees with a low tonight of 49 degrees. Sunny all day, then mostly clear overnight. The sunset is at 7:28 p.m. Winds will be calm this morning, turning out of the southeast around 5 miles an hour this afternoon. No rain in the forecast, and no weather alerts in effect. It gets warmer tomorrow — 82 and sunny.
WHAT'S FOR LUNCH AT THE FISH OPEN TABLE?
The FISH Open Table lunch today is Swedish Meatballs, served with mashed potatoes, green beans, a roll and fruit. The senior lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ellensburg Open Table at 204 North Main Street. In Upper County, FISH is now partnering with the Upper County Senior Center in Cle Elum, which serves seniors from 11:30 to 1 with its own menu. Registration is required. And the community lunch, for anyone who needs a hot meal, is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg Open Table.
