City expands tree giveaway program
Ellensburg expanded its annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway Program at Monday’s City Council meeting. The program previously required trees to be planted in rights of way. The expansion allows for trees to be planted in private residential zones. Planting areas are subject to a site visit by staff for approval. The expansion, which encompasses 1,300 acres of plantable space in residential-zoned lands, will cost the city an additional $4,500 a year. Arbor Day is April 26.
Manastash Trail access closed
The s Ridge Safety Improvement Project necessitates closing Cove Road access to Manastash Ridge Trail in April. Access of the Boy Scout Trail trailhead from Cove Road is closed through April 15. Access to the Westburg Trail trailhead is closed through today. The project eliminates the safety hazard of the open KRD canal in the lower section of the trail.
CWU boasts top trumpeter
CWU music student Corinne Williamson won the solo competition at the National Trumpet Competition in Kingsville, Texas in March to win $3,000 in prize money. Williamson selected the first movement of “Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra” by William Lovelock for her NTC performance.
CWU to conduct alert test
CWU Emergency Management will conduct a CWU Alert! Test on April 9. The CWU Alert! system notifies students, staff, and faculty of emergencies that impact the operation of the Ellensburg campus, including campus closures and delays. The notification system automatically sends text, email, and phone messages using the information in the MyCWU "Personal Details" section.
Acoustics jam in Roslyn
The Roslyn Creative Center hosts an Acoustic Music Jam at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Bring an instrument and tune or two to share. All skill levels are welcome.
Author talk and book signing on Thursday
Maximilian Uriarte will discuss and sign copies of his book, “Battle Born: Lapis lazuli,” at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, in the Student Union Ballroom. “Battle Born” is the Veterans Center Book Club selection. The event is free and open to the public.
Pfenning Road closed this week
Pfenning Road will be closed between Third Avenue and Vantage Highway this week through 5 p.m., Friday, while the contractor extends the roadway crossing culvert. The work is part of the Pfenning Road Shared Use Pathway project.

Yakima Canyon Marathon on Saturday
The Yakima River Canyon Marathon is on Saturday and will cause traffic restrictions and closures on Berry Road, Tjossem Road, Woodhouse Loop and Canyon Road before 8 a.m. From 8 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m. both lanes of SR821 through the canyon will be closed.
EHS Hall of Fame induction on Saturday
The sixth annual Ellensburg High School Hall of Fame Induction and Reception is at 7 p.m., Saturday in the high school commons. Honorees are The 1970 football team; Amanda Faire, Bob Godes, Joe Heilman, Buck Jones, Jeri Watson, and Coach/Administrator Dave Hall. Tickets are available on the EHS Athletics website.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is sloppy joes, mixed vegetables and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
