City council adjusts public comments on Zoom

The Ellensburg City Council voted at its Monday meeting to eliminate the ability for people participating in meetings over Zoom to comment on non-agenda items. The action was taken in response to recent incidents of organized efforts to spread hate speech via Zoom comments. The restriction does not apply to in-person comments and Zoom comments can still be given if an agenda item includes public comment. The city allows comments on non-agenda items towards the start of each meeting. City Attorney Terry Weiner said since the city went to a hybrid meeting format in 2021, only four comments on non-agenda items have been given over Zoom.
