City leaves camping ordinance unchanged

The Ellensburg City Council voted to leave its camping ion public property ordinance unchanged after discussion at Monday’s meeting. The ordinance currently restricts camping in several public spaces, but not all. City Attorney Terry Weiner presented options in light of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling stating cities could restrict camping in public spaces even if the city did not provide adequate shelter space for people experiencing homelessness. Ellensburg Police Chief Ken Wade said almost all homeless people move from a public space when requested and that the police department was not seeking a change to the ordinance.


Primary ballots to be mailed

The ballots for the Aug. 6 primary election will be mailed today. The ballots must be returned by 8 p.m., Aug. 6. In country contests, the primary will narrow the field from three to two candidates in the race for Superior Court Judge Department 1. The race for U.S. 8th District representative will narrow as will multiple races for statewide offices.


First Concert in the Park is Thursday

Ellensburg Summer Concerts in the Park series starts with the Rod Giles Band from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at North Alder Street Park. The concert series continues on Thursdays through Aug. 22.


Candidate forums scheduled

A primary candidate forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., today at the Centennial Center in Cle Elum. The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters of Kittitas County sponsor the events.


Safeway grand reopening is Wednesday

The grand reopening for the Ellensburg Safeway is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., today. There will be random check-stand giveaways throughout the day.


Author to speak on Woody Guthrie

Joel Underwood, author of “That Ribbon of Highway: Woody Guthrie in the Pacific Northwest” will speak at 6:30 p.m., today at Hal Holmes Community Center as part of the Ellensburg Public Library and Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau series. The presentation is free and open to the public.


Night Market is Wednesday

The Ellensburg Downtown Association Night Market is from 4 to 8 p.m., today on Pine Street, between Third and Fourth avenues. The night market features music, food and an array of vendors.


Energy code meeting on Wednesday

The City of Ellensburg’s Building Division is holding an information session about new Washington State Energy Code updates from 9 a.m. to noon today, in the Council Chambers. The presentation includes a Q&A session. The Washington State Energy Code was amended in 2021, and changes took effect on March 15. The presentation covers changes in the new code, related to residential and commercial building projects.


Blood and Guts Comes to Roslyn

Pacific Science Center on Wheels program, Blood and Guts, is at the Roslyn Creative Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., today. The program allows young people to explore science through experiments, demonstrations and interactive activities. The Roslyn Downtown Association sponsors the free program.

 

Croatian Picnic is Saturday

The annual Croatian Picnic is at noon, Saturday at the Roslyn Ball Park. There will be live music, games and activities for kids, food for sale and a beer garden. Admission is $10 for adults, and $5 for those under 21 with kids under 5 free. The Roslyn, Ronald, Cle Elum Heritage Club organizes the picnic.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is trio of salads and garlic toast. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
