City to sweep gravel post chip seal

Crews are sweeping the loose rock following last week’s chip-seal program. City officials said the sweeping operations will take a minimum of several weeks.


Cool off on Friday

With the temperature forecast to top 100 degrees, Hal Holmes Community Center will act as a cooling center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the lobby open to 7 p.m.


Hiker rescued

A man hiking the Pacific Crest Trail alone was rescued after falling 100 feet down a cliff and injuring his face and head earlier this month, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office. Two women hiking near Alaska Mountain on the Kittitas/King County border heard the man’s cries. One woman hiked a ridge to get a cell signal, while the other woman stayed with the man. The Yakima Training Center Dustoff Unit assisted with the rescue.


Printing making at the library on Wednesday

Christina Miller presents Adventures in Print Making as part of the Ellensburg Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program from 6:30 to 8 p.m., today. To make a reservation, call 962-7228 or visit the library’s reference desk.


Wednesday is the deadline for Cold Weather Shelter proposals

The deadline for proposals to operate a Cold Weather Shelter for this winter is today. This temporary shelter would replace the services formerly provided by the Kittitas Valley Ministerial Association. Kittitas County and Ellensburg staff are researching suitable locations for the shelter.


Pearl Street closure

Pearl Street will be closed between Fourth and Fifth avenues on Thursday to allow HVAC units to be installed on top of the Davidson Building.


Ian Dobson plays in the park

Ian Dobson is featured in the Summer Concerts in the Park series from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at North Alder Street Park. This is a free family-friendly event. People are invited to bring blankets, chairs and a picnic dinner. 


Unity Park artist deadline nears

Friday is the deadline for artists to submit a request for qualifications to create public art for Unity Park. The request for qualifications must include a letter of interest, resume and portfolio. The artist and proposed project will be selected on Sept. 25. Information is available on the city’s website.


Make Music ribbon cutting Friday

The ribbon cutting for the new Make Music Ellensburg location at 201 N. Pearl St. is from 4 to 5 p.m., Friday. The event features student performances, and a chance to meet the teachers and sign up for fall classes and lessons.


Youth Gladiator Dash is Saturday

The Youth Gladiator Dash for kids aged 5 through 8th grade is Saturday at Rotary Park. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. with races starting at 10 a.m. The Dash includes running, jumping, sliding, crawling, balancing, hopping, searching, climbing, throwing, and the opportunity to get muddy. Registration information is on the city’s website.


Pro and con on tax levy sought

Kittitas County seeks residents to serve on the pro and con committees for the Road Tax Levy Lid Lift measure on the November ballot. The deadline to apply to serve on the committees is Friday. The measure increases the tax rate from 77 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to $1.01 per $1,000. Additional Pro and Against Committee information is on the Kittitas County Auditor’s Office Local Voters’ Pamphlet website.

 

SPORTS

Junior Rodeo on Saturday

The annual Ellensburg Rodeo Posse Junior Rodeo starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Ellensburg Rodeo Area. The event includes calf riding, steer riding, barrels race, pole bending, California stake race, flag race, goat tail tying, goat tying and mutton busting.

 

Radio Waves in the playoffs

The ECR Radio Waves women’s softball team opens the playoffs against FNL at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Rotary Park softball fields. A win sends the Radio Waves in the league championship game next week.


LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is a chopped Italian sandwich, cucumber salad and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
