Missing girl found in Cle Elum River Valley

A 10-year-old girl missing for more than 24 hours in the Cathedral Pass Trailhead area north of Cle Elum was found Monday afternoon safe with only minor scrapes, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.

Shunghia Mashwani of Federal Way was with her extended family on Sunday afternoon near the trailhead off Fish Lake Road, playing in the woods. When the family walked back to the trailhead for lunch, they notice Shunghia was missing. There is no cell phone coverage in the valley. A passerby on a UTV saw the group searching and offered to call 911 on a Starlink phone at their cabin.

Sheriff deputies in coordination with Kittitas County Search and Rescue launched a search using volunteers, K9s and drones. Advanced air support also was provided by Spokane County and King County.

Shunghia was found at 3 p.m., Monday by ground team volunteers, John Sand and Liz Pachaud. She had traveled south about 1.5 miles from where she was last seen. She said she spent the night between some trees.
