Council asks for more information on jail costs

Before agreeing to a three-year contract for housing inmates at the Kittitas County Corrections Center, the Ellensburg City Council asked for an explanation of the reasons on the cost increase from $77 per night to $110. Due to a scheduling conflict, Ellensburg Police Department representatives could not attend Monday’s council. The council asked for information at its Dec. 2 meeting. The city also has a contract to house inmates at the Sunnyside jail for $69 per night, with some limitations.

 

Fall Choral Classic at CWU this week

Central Washington University’s Fall Choral and Jazz Classic continues in the McIntyre Music Building. The classic draws high school groups from across the region to participate in workshops and features performances of CWU Choral groups. The CWU Choral groups perform at 11:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. today. The concerts are free and open to the public.

 

CWU hosts sport management summit

Central Washington University hosts the annual Northwest Sport Management Summit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., today, in Nicholson Pavilion. After a brief welcome, the Northwest Center for Sport will present its Alumni of the Year Award to Tim Booth, an Ellensburg native and CWU graduate, and longtime sportswriter for The Associated Press who started a new position with The Seattle Times this fall. Panel discussions follow at 10 and 11:30 a.m.

 

Discussion focuses on DEI in Kittitas County

A panel discussion focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion in Kittitas County at 6 p.m., today in the Oddfellows Lodge on Pine Street. The panel, organized by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County features representatives from the Ellensburg City Council, the city’s DEI Commission and KVH. The event is free and open to the public.

 

CWU Theatre production opens Friday

The Central Washington University Theatre production of “John Proctor is the Villian,” opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in the Tower Theater. The play follows a group of high school students as they study Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Information on tickets and the times and dates of other performances is on the CWU Theatre Department website.

 

Recitals this week at CWU

Concerts scheduled at CWU this week include a percussion ensemble concert at 7 p.m., Thursday, and a saxophone studio recital at 7 p.m., Friday. All performances are in the McIntyre Music Building and are free and open to the public.

 

Audubon meeting addresses dinosaurs among us

“The Dinosaurs Among Us,” is the topic of the Kittitas County Audubon Society meeting at 7 p.m., Thursday, in Hal Holmes Community Center. Kim Adelson, the vice president and education committee chair of the Black Hills Audubon Society will make the presentation. It is free and open to the public.


High school fall play concludes this weekend

The Ellensburg High School Fall Play production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” ends this weekend at the Morgan Performing Arts Center. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 7 p.m., Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m., Saturday. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students.


SPORTS

Youth basketball signup closes this week

Friday is the final day for signing a child up for the Youth Basketball League for boys grades first through eighth. Signup information is on the Parks and Recreation page of the city’s website. The player draft is Jan. 11 and games are played from Feb. 1 to March 8.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is beef and pork Bolognese, mixed vegetables and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
