NEWS

City Council addresses incident of hate speech

In response to a coordinated effort by individuals espousing anti-Semitism and racism as well as inciting violence via Zoom during public comments on non-agenda items at its previous meeting, the Ellensburg City Council discussed options for managing remote comments at its meeting Monday night. The council will continue to work on this issue but directed staff to develop rules requiring remote commentators to identify the topic to be discussed and list talking points. The council also agreed to direct the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission to reach out to the targeted groups to determine how the city can respond in a meaningful manner.


Ellensburg Community Thanksgiving dinner Wednesday

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is from 3 to 6 p.m., today at the Kittitas Valley Event Center Armory. Call the Adult Activity Center at 509-962-7242 to sign up to help or donate.


Upper Kittitas County Community Thanksgiving dinner Wednesday

The Upper Kittitas County Senior Center is serving free lunch to the community from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., today. The lunch will be a traditional Thanksgiving meal of roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy with pumpkin pie and apple crisp for dessert.


Turkey at The Time Out

The Time Out Saloon in Kittitas is offering a free Thanksgiving dinner from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday. Everyone is invited.


Registration open for boys basketball

Registration for the boys, first to eighth grade, basketball league closes on Friday. The player draft is Jan 6, practices start Jan. 15 and the play goes from Jan. 27 to March 2. Registration information is available on the city of Ellensburg’s website.


Toys for Tots collected

The Downer County Bikers are collecting toys for its annual Toys for Tots program, scheduled for Dec. 2. Toys can be dropped off at boxes at 509 Philly, Campus Starbucks, CW Barber Shop, Dru Bru, Ellensburg Power Sports, Jerrol’s, Kittitas Title and Escrow, Knudson’s Lumber, Mike’s Tavern, Red Lion, The Tav and Yakima Federal Savings Bank.


Getting into the Christmas spirit

Kittitas County shifts quickly from turkey and stuffing to Christmas cheer starting on Friday.

In Ellensburg, Moments to Remember takes center stage. Festivities run from 4 to 7 p.m. and include a petting zoo, living performances by The Studio, Dubstep Studio and Central Washington Dance Academy in the Scott Rollins State Farm windows, the Streets of Bethlehem Live Nativity and the tree lighting with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Also on Friday, the Valley Musical Theatre presents “Noel – The Heart of Christmas,” an evening of music and poetry at 6:30 in the Elks Ballroom at the Hotel Windrow. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. There also is a showing at 6:30 p.m., Saturday.

The Ellensburg Downtown Association’s Shop Local starts on Sunday and continues through Dec. 14. Purchases of $25 or more at local businesses will enter shoppers into a drawing for cash prizes of $250, $500 and $1,000 on Dec. 15.

Christmas in Cle Elum starts its month-long celebration with Plain Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.


Holiday closures

Ellensburg schools are closed today for a holiday weekend. City of Ellensburg facilities are closed on Thursday and Friday. FISH Open Table is closed on Thursday and Friday.


SPORTS

Time set for CWU playoff game

Central Washington University will play Bemidji State at 11 a.m., Saturday, in Bemidji, Minnesota, in the second round of the NCAA Division 2 football playoffs. The Wildcats advanced with a 16-13 overtime win over Western Colorado last Saturday.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is chicken and sausage gumbo, rice and pears. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
