Cheech Marin to appear at Central
CWU presents “An Evening with Cheech Marin: A Life of Art, Culture and Entertainment,” at 7 p.m., Thursday in the McIntyre Music Building as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Marin first came to notice as a member of the Cheech and Chong comedy duo in the early 1970s and has had a career that spans comedy, acting and directing. Marin also is a leading advocate for Chicano art. The presentation is free to the public. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and people are encouraged to arrive early to get a seat.
Central art gallery show opens Thursday
An exhibit at Sarah Spurgeon Gallery featuring the revival of traditional Hawaiian barkcloth, ore kappa, opens on Thursday with an artist talk at 5 p.m. in Randall Hall Room 117 and a reception at 5 p.m. at the Spurgeon Gallery. Kapa is a non-woven textile made from the beaten bark of the paper mulberry tree.
Music at Central on Thursday
Two musical performances are set for the McIntyre Music Building tonight. John Michel and Giyong Ahn perform a cello and piano recital in the Recital Hall at 6 p.m. Guest artists The TexiCali Trio perform with trombone and piano at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall.
Mural ribbon cutting on Friday
As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the First Friday Art Walk, there will be a ribbon cutting for the new Creative District sign/mural to the left of Nuwave Gallery/Fortuity Cellars on Third Avenue at 4 p.m., Friday.
Kittitas County Coroner’s Office recognized
The Kittitas County Coroner’s Office received accreditation from the International Association of Coroner’s and Medical Examiners. The completion of this process, which is for five years, indicates professionalism and compassion by the Kittitas County Coroner’s Office. Kittitas County Coroner Nick Henderson credited Chief Deputy Coroner Cori McKean for leading the accreditation effort.
Unity Park grand opening is Saturday
The grand opening ceremony for Unity Park at Fourth Avenue and Pearl Street in downtown Ellensburg is Saturday. Music starts at 12:30 with the ceremony kicking off at 1 p.m. Performances include The Sleepers, Yakama Nation’s Little Swans Dancers, Killdeer String Band, Shakespeare In The Park, Mexican Folclorico Dance, Ellensburg Dance Ensemble, and Star Anna.
Windall Cider Fest is Saturday
The annual WindFall Cider Fest is 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday at the Kittitas Valley Event Center. The fest features at least 12 cider houses from Puget Sound, Wenatchee, Yakima, and beyond, and live music by Ellensburg Blusers and Rusty Cage. The event is a fundraiser for the Kittitas Environmental Education Network’s Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center. This is a 21-plus event. Tickets are $45 with five scrips and $20 for music only.

Cross-country teams honored
Three Kittitas County high school cross-country teams are ranked in the top 10 of the state. The Ellensburg boys team is ranked fourth in 2A and the girls are ranked fifth. The Cle Elum-Roslyn boys team is ranked fifth in 1B/2B. The Ellensburg cross country teams compete in a league meet at 5 p.m., Thursday, at Franklin Park in Yakima. Cle Elum-Roslyn’s boys and girls are at a league meet at 4 p.m., Thursday, in Warden.
In high school volleyball action on Thursday, Ellensburg hosts Prosser at 6 p.m., Kittitas hosts La Salle at 5:30 p.m., and Cle Elum-Roslyn travels to Highland.
LUNCH
The FISH Open Table Lunch is smoked sausage skillet, mashed potatoes, a roll and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
