Council opts not to take a position on initiative

The majority of the Ellensburg City Council felt it best for the council not to take a position on Initiative 2117, which concerns carbon tax credit trading. The council allowed audience members to speak regarding the initiative. In other action at Monday’s meeting, the council approved creating a draft ordinance that would allow water and sewer hookup fees to be waived for affordable housing projects if alternate funding is available.


Ballots being returned

Kittitas County voters received their Nov. 5 General Election ballots last week and as of Monday afternoon, about 7 percent of ballots had been returned. All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m., Nov. 5.


Cold Weather Shelter volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the Cold Weather Shelter being offered from Nov. 15 to March 15 at the Western Village off of Alder Street. More information is available on the HopeSource Facebook page.


Fitterer’s Building grand opening

The grand opening for the renovated Fitterer’s Building in downtown Ellensburg is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday. The official ribbon cutting is at 3 p.m. The former furniture store is now home to multiple businesses including Woody’s Classic man, The Sweet Spot, Siren Song Bistrot, The Grazing Table, Sparrows Nest, Ponderosa Construction and RLR Cultural Resources. There will be a raffle with prizes announced after the ribbon cutting.


School board meets today

The Ellensburg School Board meets at 5:30 p.m., today at Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School. Improvement plans for Mount Stuart and Ida Nason are on the agenda.


Ellensburg Academy offered

The Ellensburg Academy is offered at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hal Holmes Community Center. The Ellensburg Academy is a series of civic education workshops designed to inform residents and community stakeholders about the operations of city government and what is involved in delivering and maintaining services to Ellensburg residents. RSVP on the city’s website.


Drive-through flu shot clinic is Friday

The annual drive-through flu vaccination clinic is from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday at Western Village off Alder Street. The clinic is a cooperative effort between the Kittitas County Health Department and Community Health of Central Washington. The free vaccine id for children and adults, but with a limited supply, it will be first come-first served. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over 6 months old receive a flu shot. 


Central welcomes comedian for homecoming show

Comedian Preacher Lawson will perform for Central’s Homecoming Comedy Show at 9 p.m., Friday, in the Student Union Ballroom. Lawson is one of the top comedians to come out of the America’s Got Talent show. Central is his only stop in Washington on his Funny as Bleep national tour. Tickets are available on Central’s website.


SPORTS

High school athletics for the week

In high school athletics this week, the Ellensburg cross country team hosts a league meet at 5 p.m., Thursday at Rotary Park. EHS volleyball travels to play Toppenish at 6 p.m., Thursday. Kittitas volleyball hosts Highland at 6:30 p.m., Thursday. Cle Elum-Roslyn cross country competes in the league championship meet at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, at Apple Ridge Run. The Warriors volleyball team travels to play White Swan at 6:30 p.m., Thursday. Cle Elum’s soccer team hosts welcomes Granger at 6 p.m., Thursday.

 

CWU football players honored

CWU quarterback Kennedy McGill was named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week and lineman Daniel Matagi earned the conference’s defensive honor for leading the Wildcats to a 31-0 win over Texas A&M Kingsville last Saturday. Central hosts Midwestern State at 6 p.m., Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.

 

LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is lemon-garlic chicken pasta, mixed vegetables and oranges. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
