City approves Unity Park art work

The City Council approved Crista Ann Ames’ “Harmonize” public art installation for Unity Park. “Harmonize” is a six-foot tall structure, representing two arms and hands clasping, with flora and fauna imagery. The arms will appear as if emerging from the earth and the flora and fauna will be identified with an accompanying plaque. Ames will complete the structure using large kilns at the University of Montana over the winter and install it in June. The city’s Arts Commission reviewed three finalists and unanimously recommended Ames’ work. The city set aside $45,000 for the art and installation.


City moves forward on Field House

Ellensburg is moving forward with the design/build phase of the new Field House at Rotary Park after receiving the insurance settlement for the Ellensburg Racquet Center destroyed in an arson fire two years ago. The city receives about $7.2 million in insurance. The first phase of the project identifies the scope of work and a target project budget. The city will need to secure more funding depending on the project scope.


Cle Elum accepting Pangrazi nominees

Cle Elum is accepting nominations for the 2024 Judge Paul Pangrazi Memorial Service award. The award honors people who have accumulated a record of distinguished service that benefits Cle Elum citizens. Nominations are accepted until Oct. 24. More information is on the city’s Facebook page.


Elections explained at forum tonight

An informational meeting on elections will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Hal Holmes Community Center. The event is presented by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County and the Ellensburg Public Library in partnership with the Kittitas County Auditor’s Office. Kittitas County Auditor, Bryan Elliott, will answer questions about voting procedures, ballot processing and election security.


Candidate forums set for next week

Two candidate forums will be held next week in Kittitas County. A forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cle Elum Centennial Center on Oct. 14. The Ellensburg forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 15 at Hal Holmes Community Center. The events are sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Kittitas County, the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Clubs of Upper Kittitas County.


Concert at Central on Friday

A New Music Festival Composition Concert will be at the McIntyre Music Building Recital Hall at 7 p.m., Friday. This event is free and open to the public.


Volunteers needed for Cold Weather Shelter

Volunteers are needed for this winter’s Cold Weather Shelter. The shelter will be located in the Western Village adjacent to the Ellensburg Rodeo Arena and will be operated by HopeSource. Training times are available. Information is on the HopeSource Facebook page.


SPORTS

High school teams compete this week

In high school athletics this week, the Ellensburg volleyball team travels to play Ephrata at 6 p.m., Thursday. The Cle Elum-Roslyn soccer team travels to play Warden at 6 p.m., today. The Warriors volleyball team hosts La Salle at 6:30 p.m., Thursday. The Cle Elum cross country team is at a meet at Tri Cities Prep at 4 p.m., Thursday. The Kittitas volleyball team hosts Goldendale at 6:30 p.m., Thursday.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is Tuscan sausage soup, garlic bread and apples. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
