Ellensburg School buses are back on the roads this morning and the kids are back in school today.



NEWS

Rescheduled Historical Ellensburg run is today

The Historical Ellensburg postponed in July due to the heat has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m., today. The tour includes three stops at historical locations. Participants are invited to run, write and learn about the city. A leisurely pace is promised with the mile route spread out over 45 to 60 minutes. Preregistration at the library is required. The event originally was part of the Ellensburg Library Summer Reading program.


School is back in session

School is back in session this week in Kittitas County with grades 1st through 12th returning to the classroom. Wednesday is the first day of school in the Ellensburg, Kittitas, Cle Elum-Rolsyn, Damman and Easton school districts. Thursday is the first day of school in the Thorp School District. Kindergarten schedules vary from district to district. To help drivers become more aware of school zones, Ellensburg Police officers will conduct extra speed patrols in September.


Bear specialists to speak in Rolsyn

State Department of Fish and Wildlife bear specialists will speak at a presentation from 6 to 7:30 p.m., today, at the Masonic Hall, next to the Roslyn Post Office. Information on bear behavior and safety tips for living in bear country will be shared.


Chance to support animals

Kittitas County Friends of Animals will have a table at the Cle Elum Safeway on Friday to collect pet food donations and money.


SPORTS

Volleyball registration closes Friday

Registration for the Adult Open Volleyball League closes on Friday. Teams may register and individuals can sign up for the Free Agent List. Teams may play with any combination of female or male players; there is no minimum for either gender. Registration information is on the Parks and Recreation page of the city’s website.


High school football kicks off Friday

High school football season starts Friday night for three of Kittitas County’s teams. Ellensburg hosts Othello at 7 p.m. Kittitas welcomes Granger at 7 p.m. Cle Elum-Roslyn hosts Manson at 7 p.m. Easton’s football team opens on Sept. 14 at Clallam Bay.


CWU teams open season

CWU’s fall sports teams open their seasons on the road this week. The women’s volleyball team plays Metro State in an invitational at Western Washington University on Thursday. The Wildcats face San Francisco State in Bellingham on Friday. The women’s soccer team plays Point Loma in San Diego on Saturday. The football team also is in San Diego, taking on the University of San Diego at 1 p.m., Saturday.


LUNCH

The FISH Open Table Lunch is a Chef salad, a roll and peaches. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.
