Filing week starts

Monday was the first day candidates could file for elected office in the 2024 General Election. As of Monday afternoon, Cory Wright had filed for the Kittitas County Commissioner District 1 seat, Chris Herion had filed for the Kittitas County Superior Court Judge Position 1, and James Kirkham filed for Kittitas County Superior Court Judge Position 2. Tom Dent filed for 13th District Legislative Position 1.  Kittitas County Commissioner District 1 and the 13th District Legislative Position 2 also are on the ballot. Filing may be done electronically through the Kittitas County Auditor’s website or in person at the Auditor’s Office in the courthouse through Friday.

 

Road closed on Thursday and Friday

North Main Street will be closed around the Kittitas County Courthouse from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 p.m., Friday to allow a crane to install a rooftop heating and ventilation unit.

 

After-hours at Basecamp Books

This month’s Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce After-Hours event is from 5 to 7 p.m., today at Basecamp Books and Bites. The event is open to the public.

 

Ethics Lab set for Tuesday

The monthly CWU Ethics Lab community discussion is Freedom and Manipulation: The Ethics of Digital Persuasion at 6 p.m., today, in the Hal Holmes Community Center. CWU professors Lauren Nuckols and David Schwan lead the discussion.

 

School board meets Wednesday

There will be a discussion of the climate at Ellensburg High School with principal Beau Snow at the Ellensburg School Board meeting at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday at Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School.

 

Trombone recital on Wednesday

CWU trombone students debut new works written by CWU composition students in a concert at 6 p.m., Wednesday, in the McIntyre Music Building. The concert is free. Other free concerts this week at the McIntyre Music Building include a Cristian Grases guest artist performance at 7 p.m., today, a faculty violin recital with Michelle Rahn at noon, Wednesday and a tuba-euphonium studio recital at 7 p.m., Thursday.

 

Celebration of Bike Month starts Thursday

Ellensburg kicks off its Bike Month Celebration with four local cyclists sharing stories of epic bike rides at 6 p.m., Thursday, in the Hal Holmes Community Center. The presenters are David Lygre, Lily Frey, Scott Nicolai and Dave Burfiend.

 

Community meeting in Cle Elum

A community meeting to discuss proposed commercial sewer rate increases in Cle Elum will be at 6 p.m., Thursday in the City Council Chambers. This will be an open discussion with the mayor and city council.

 

Valley Theatre production opens Friday

Valley Theatre Company’s production of “The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood,” opens with a 7 p.m., Friday, in the Ramsey Ballroom above the Clymer Museum. The show continues with two performances on Saturday, a single show on May 17 and two shows on May 18. Tickets are $15 for general admission if purchased on the Valley Theatre’s website.

 

Tickets on sale for Wild and Whiskey Tour

Tickets are on sale for the inaugural Wild and Whiskey History Tour on June 2. The event includes a tour of the PSE Wild Horse Wind farm and Whiskey Dick Mountain region, a presentation at the Kittitas County Historical Museum on Ellensburg’s history with Prohibition, finishing with a visit to the Elk Heights Distillery. Tickets are $40 and are available on the museum’s website.

 

SPORTS

EHS baseball in district playoffs

The Ellensburg High School baseball team travels to play Othello in a district playoff game at 4:30 p.m. today. A win qualifies EHS for the state tournament. A loss sends the Bulldogs to an elimination game on Saturday.

 

LUNCH                                                        

The FISH Open Table Lunch is braised beef mashed potato bowl, mixed vegetables, a roll and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.

The forecasted high today in Ellensburg is 57 degrees. Sunset is at 8:21 p.m., and the expected nighttime low is 40 degrees. Winds will be 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts possible.
