NEWS
The Ellensburg City Council is asking citizens to help out members of the community during the ongoing shutdown of the federal government. The government shutdown started Oct. 1 after Congress failed to pass appropriations legislation for the coming fiscal year. Nearly a million federal workers were furloughed, and another 2 million employees continued working, but without pay. Ellensburg Mayor Rich Elliott wrote a statement for the city that encourages people to help out those who are in need, and at the council’s meeting Monday, councilmembers approved the message with their unanimous support.
In Tuesday’s elections, Councilmember Nancy Lillquist was leading in her race for Position 1 against former fire chief John Sinclair, while Councilmember Nancy Goodloe was handily in front of challenger Arin R. Smith for Position 2, and Councilmember Delano Palmer was beating Sam Ezell for Position 3. Ellensburg voters were saying “yes” on Election Night to Proposition 1, a proposal to impose a 0.2% transit tax to fund the city’s bus system.
A state audit of the city of Cle Elum is underway, City Administrator Robert Omans said last week. The review of the city’s books is the first since Cle Elum received a $22 million court judgment against it last year and later filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy.
