City council pulls funding from Pizza Klatch

The City Council approved next year’s budget for the city’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission but removed $1,400 for the Pizza Klatch program at Ellensburg High School, and instead directed the commission to replace the public money with private donations. Pizza Klatch allows LGBTQ-plus students and their allies to hang out at lunchtime and have pizza. Klatch organizers said there is no curriculum or resources provided and students primarily talk about tests, school activities and video games rather than sexual orientation and gender identity. The council rejected a proposal by council member Joshua Thompson to require students to have parental approval to attend the Pizza Klatch.
