Mural celebrates 100 years of rodeo

A mural celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Ellensburg Rodeo will be painted on the Craig’s Hill water tower this summer in time for the annual Labor Day event. The announcement was made at the Ellensburg City Council meeting Monday night that the Rural Mural Plural — consisting of Wenatchee-based artists Marlin Peterson, Heather Dappen and Ellen Bruex — was selected. The mural will be completed by July 31.


Path cleared for Unity Park construction

The Ellensburg City Council officially rejected appeals of the Unity Park project at Monday’s meeting clearing the way for demolition of the former bank drive-thru on the downtown property and construction of the new facilities. City officials tentatively scheduled the groundbreaking of the project for July but cautioned that timeline could change.


Fire season rehearsal today

The state Department of Natural Resources will conduct its 2023 Wildland Fire Season Flying Rehearsal from noon to 5 p.m., today in the Naneum Ridge area north of Ellensburg. The exercise will include the use of smoke to replicate wildfire conditions and smoke is expected to be visible through a large area of lower Kittitas Valley during the exercise.


LUNCHTIME

Lunch at the Ellensburg School District elementary schools today is Cheese and Pepp Ripper at Lincoln, Valley View and Mount Stuart and Domino’s Pizza at Ida Nason Aronica. Middle school students have a choice of turkey and cheese sandwich, Southwestern chicken salad, a burger basket, deli sandwiches, salad bar and fresh fruit. Lunch items at the high school include barbecue chicken drumstick and cornbread, Domino’s Pizza, burger basket, chicken Caesar wrap, salad bar and fresh fruit.


The FISH Open Table lunch today is roasted rosemary pork loin, mashed potatoes and green beans with a mushroom thyme sauce, dinner roll and applesauce. The lunch is open to all seniors age 60-plus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Ellensburg, and noon to 1 p.m., in Cle Elum. Meal sites are the Ellensburg Open Table and the Cle Elum Seventh-day Adventist Church. The community lunch for anyone needing a hot meal is from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ellensburg location.


EVENTS

CWU Symphonic Band to perform

The CWU Symphonic Band will perform Halcyon at 7 tonight at the McIntyre Music Building. The concert explores the concepts of love, innocence, peace and energy. Admission is free.


Magazine launch party Wednesday

The launch and reading party for the 2023 release of the CWU student literary journal, Manastash, is 3 p.m., today in the Student Union and Recreation Center Pit. This will be volume 33 of the magazine.


Butterflies topic of Audubon meeting

Kevin Burls will present on the Butterflies of Washington at this month’s Kittitas Audubon Society meeting, 7 p.m., Thursday at Hal Holmes Community Center. Burls is a conservation biologist for the endangered species program of the Xerces Society.


Final week for “Into the Woods”

CWU Theatre’s production of “Into the Woods” enters its final week of performances with a show at 7 p.m., Thursday, in McConnell Auditorium.


Fundraiser for school bands

A Jazz Café fundraiser for the Cle Elum-Roslyn high school and middle school bands is set from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday at the Cle Elum Eagles. Tickets are $20 for dinner and music, and $10 for music only.


SPORTS

Softball teams play today

The Kittitas High School and Cle Elum-Roslyn High School girls’ softball teams both compete in district tournament play today. Cle Elum-Roslyn hosts Tri-Cities Prep at 4 p.m. Kittitas welcomes River View at 4 p.m. Win or lose, both teams will continue to play on Saturday at the Pasco Sports Complex.


Track at regional meet

The Ellensburg High School boys and girls track team will compete at the 2A regional track championship, 3:45 p.m., Friday at Ephrata High School.
